I am thinking about using cloth especially since I won't be working for at least 6 months after the baby. This makes me feel like I don't have an excuse not to.
However, how long do you need to use cloth to make it worth the expense of getting started? I know that no daycares around here will allow it so if / when I do get a job, i'll have to stop, at least partially.
DH looks at me like I'm crazy when I talk about it but he needs to learn more about it (as do I) but saving money is always a favorite topic of his ![]()
Re: Question for those CDing
With the one sized diapers + prefolds I think it's affordable pretty quickly. A couple months, maybe.
You can always CD just at home too. Lots of people do that.
Also, while my center didn't technically take CDs, they acquiesced when I pointed out that Owen gets rashy in sposies and it was like a peanut allergy they weren't accommodating. I also came armed with the state regs.
I CD'd my first (and still am) and plan to CD the following children (God Willing). I think cding all children (regardless of how long you do it for) makes it somewhat economically worthy (that less disposables you have to buy). However, it really depends on what systems you plan to use (prefolds, one size fits all, sized all in ones). I will say that my husband will not use prefolds over his dead body. The one size fits all does not really "work till 11 or 12 pounds (they are super duper bulky), and for my first, (and because I was in "survival" mode), I used disposables for the first 6 weeks, until I caught the hang of CDing. I love CDing though, and really think its worth all the effort.
OH- I met a woman in a restaruant once who had only purchased 12 one size fits all, and was happily using those same 12 for more than six months. I beleive she said she washed daily, and was not too particular on the bulk factor, but I was impressed.
Good Luck. - let me know if you want to know what brands are my favorites
We CD and bought a few different kinds to figure out what worked. I wasn't sure if our DC would accept CD, but it turns out they do.
We used sposies for the first month or so. We tried one-sized, but they were just too bulky. I didn't care for them until about 12 lbs - even now, I prefer the trimmer diapers.
I love my sized BG, but they aren't the most cost efficient. Of course, if you only intend to use them for 6 months, it may be an option to be some and wash frequently.
The cheapest option is prefolds. I don't care for them and neither does my husband. Of course, some folks LOVE them.
Perhaps you could buy one or two of each and see how you like them? Not a big investment, you can figure out what you like, then run numbers to see if it works for you.
