If you have an item from each brand right now that fit your DC the same way, are they the same size? If not, how are they different (i.e. one's 3mos, the other is 6-12 etc)?
Gymboree is much more "accurate" to LOs size. He is in Carter's 9 months comfortably right now - 6 months are almost too short for him but we are squeezing him in them one last time. His Gymboree 6-12 clothes are bigger and he has some room to grow into them. I find Gymboree sizing is very similar to Baby Gap.

So his Gymboree 6-12's are bigger than his 9mo Carter's. Did I read that right?
I'm ordering some things on Gymboree right now and he wears mainly all Carter's stuff...in 6mos...but needs 9mos very soon. He doesn't have any Gym stuff yet and wanted to get an idea what he'd need
Gymboree 6-12 months is what you need. He would probably fit in gymboree 3-6 months but only for another month or two if he's going to need Carter's 9mo soon. Gymboree is bigger at that size b/c again it's 6-12mo where Carter's 9mo fits kids 6-9mo not 12mo. Hope that makes sense.
My LO is a big guy. He was almost 16lb at 4mo and he is already in 6-12mo gymboree clothes at not quite 6 months.
My baby is about 9 to 10lbs (size 1 diapers), and he is in Carter's 3 months right now. He could still wear 0-3 months, but I am buying 3-6 months at Gymboree and the Gap for him so that he can grow into it.

My DD weighed 17 lbs at 4 mo. and was 25.5" and she has been wearing 9 mo carters and 6-12 gymboree since then. But some of the one piece outfits from gymboree she is in the 12 month size already. But for the footed jammies she is still in 9 mo. carters. Gymboree runs bigger than Carter's.
Gymboree typically runs a little larger. My girls have long torsos, and they tend out grow one-piece outfits and onesies. The Gymboree onesies don't seem to be any longer than Carter's, just a bit wider. I sometimes have to buy tops a size bigger than bottoms so that their tummies aren't hanging out.
I do think Gymboree runs a little big on my DS. HTH!
Happy Birthday, little man. We love you so much!

I might want to specify I am referring to Carter's, proper, not the Walmart or Target Carter's brand (because I don't know if they run the same).

The size chart for Gymboree:
0-3 months Height: up to 23" 7-12 lbs
3-6 months Height: 23-25" 12-17 lbs
6-12 months Height 25-29" 17-22 lbs

Carter's sizing is giving you the "max" size on the tag. If it is a "3" month in Carters, it is really 0-3. "6" are 3-6.
Here's their chart:
