3rd Trimester

Info from my mother..

Was talking to my mom last night and she said that the period type cramps that I feel now and then are actually BH. Is this right? I do get the period type cramps off and on, and they go away when I sit down and rest.

Re: Info from my mother..

  • Yes! When I was pregnant with DS I would get period-like cramps from time to time. My mom would always ask me if it was BH or contractions and I said no because I was picturing something else as contractions. Then I was induced and discovered that it had been contractions all along!
  • Actually, I've been told my 3 different OB's and several nurses (I've been battling PTL for 6 weeks and have been in and out of the hospital) that those are early labor contractions, not BH. I would check with your Dr.

  • For me, BH has always been when my entire belly has tightened up without pain; this started in the late 20's weeks. I started getting menstrual cramps about 3wks ago, and my dr said these are early contractions. So I feel 2 different things.

  • I've had a lot of BH lately and none are painful. It's just a tightening feeling around my whole stomach. As far as I've heard, BH are not supposed to hurt at all.

My doctor said it was probably BH contractions and absolutely nothing to be concerned about.

  • oooo I hope they ARE early contractions because I've been feeling them off and on since Thurs... and pretty consistantly since last night! They arent timeable though, its just a constant period-like cramp...

  • It depends on a few things, actually. They could still only be BH if they're not lasting more than a few seconds and very sporatic. If they're very intense, last more than 30secs, come more often that 4x's an hr, and don't let up, even when you're resting and drinking plenty of fluids, then it's PTL.

According to the RN that I had with one of my trips to L&D, RLP can feel like period cramps that last for a few secs and come and go just like contractions, though I've never heard this or experienced it before.

Depending on how far along you are and how intensely they're working on your cervix will determine what the drs will want to do about it. If you're less than 36-37wks and your cervix is progressing then they'll want to stop them for sure, even if it is just BH.

  • Yep, those sound like my BH's :)
  • To add...

The cramps don't really hurt, more like a very mild ache. And they're sporadic. And go away when I just rest for a moment. Usually doesn't happen more than once or twice a day, and not necessarily every day.
