Help! What is a good first birthday present for a girl, and a good three-year-old present for a boy?

Going to two kids' parties this weekend and would love ideas - thank you!

  • My DD loved Little People stuff around 1 (still does), my nephew will be 3 next month and is currently obsessed with anything from Toy Story or pirates :)

  • I used to work in the 2 and a half year old room at a "school" and the boys LOVED those bubble lawn mowers. I think they're only like $15 at walmart or something.. seriously, they used to fight over them!! As for the one year old girl.. what about one of those mats you fill with water and you can "draw" on it? (i hope im describing that right..)

I always give books as gifts. Kids have so many toys these days it kind of irks me! Go to your local bookstore and the staff there should be able to recommend some age appropriate books.

This!  Most of my mom-friends will request books (when I ask) since the kids usually have so many toys.  And if for some reason I don't give books, I give puzzles.

  • For 1 year olds I always call and ask the parents what they child needs.  They have tons of toys at that point so I usually try to steer towards books or clothes.

For a 3 year old .... bubbles.  I love the bubble machines that you can just pour the stuff in and turn in on and then sit back and watch the kids dance in the bubbles.

  • I don't know about the one-year-old, but my three-year-old nephew is really into dinosaurs.

  • For the boy, anything with superheros, cars or dinosaurs.

For the girl, puzzles, books, a soft purse with soft toys inside, maybe some of those toddler markers by Crayola (looks like a ball)

  • Books!! I've bought my daughter toys on top of toys and her favorite things to play with are books.

  • My DD just turned one.  She loves musical toys and she loves Little People toys.  She also got a baby doll stroller (which is great because it gives her just enough support to work on walking) and the Melissa & Doug "fill and spill" toys... She got the picnic basket and the purse.  She loves both :).

For a three year old...  I know these are popular: https://rodytoy.com/.  My SIL got it for my DD and she has a three year old.  It is definitely a bit too old for my daughter still but she swears that all of her friends of toddlers love them.  3 year olds are hard because I feel like even if i do know what they like, I have a hard time finding something they don't already have.  For the last 3 year old bday party I went to I made a big summer basket (big sand pail with bubbles, sidewalk chalk, water toys, beach ball, and a few cute "surfer" clothes).  It seemed to go over well.  The party was in June though.

  • My DD turned 1 at the end of May. She loves any musical toy and books!! Seriously, I think books are great and in fact when people asked for ideas, I suggested books. Also, she got a purse from Fisher Price filled with little toys like keys, lipstick, mirror and that is one of her most favorite things!! She carries it around everywhere.
