3rd Trimester

Working out?

Is anyone still working out? I was told to stop all running by my OB about a month ago but got the green light to do 30 minutes on the eliptical since it is low impact... but ONLY if I watched my heart rate and agreed to not get out of breath.

I'm 36 weeks now and planning on continuing until I can't anymore... It just gives me that little bit of extra energy and decreases my stress level! And at this point I feel I can use all the extra energy and decreased stress I can get! :  )

Re: Working out?

  • Was there any reason in particular your OB advised you to stop running?

I'm still able to work out; I'm still running 3x a week (yes, I'm way slower, and have to take several more walk breaks), and taking 2 spin classes a week. I am also lifting weights 3x a week...and I"m almost 38 weeks! My doctor is gung ho for me to workout as long as I can.

Since I know I'll have to take some time off to heal and recover after baby is born, I'm trying to stick with it until delivery. I do have days where I totally don't feel like it, but I also know that I feel best on the days when I do something!

  • I have a mommy-to-be fitness class two times a week and on the nights that I don't have my class I walk my dogs anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 miles. My doctor hasn't said anything to me about it.

  • RunningWife: I had some bleeding after running pretty consistently around 29-30 weeks and while my doctor was happy that I love to run, he pretty much insisted that I move to something a little lower impact. I miss those long runs but I'm fine with the eliptical if it helps keep my LO safe!

  • If you've been exercising your whole pregnancy, and are low-risk, then I wouldn't worry about stopping. If it starts to be uncomfortable, then I'd stop/slow down, though.

I've been riding my bike since spring, and don't have any plans on stopping (though I also don't have any plans on telling my midwives that I am). I'm also swimming laps a few times a week, and will until the pool closes (Labor Day).

  • I just got home from the gym. I do 45-60 on the ellipitical followed by free weights for about 15-20 mionutes 4 days a week. One day to go to prenatal yoga. Its really good for me to de-stress and I always feel better after. I notivced today I was getting cramps so I took my pace way down until they stopped and sped up to a more moderate pace. I plan on checking in about work outs at mt next appt, but plan to continue until I can't.

Nosoup, why would you keep your activity from your mw?

  • I stopped running after my BFP - basically sat on the couch until 10 weeks out of fear.  I still walk on the treadmill or around the neighborhood and still maintain my regular Yoga practice several times a week (with increasing modifications!!)  My doctor told me to keep going as long as I'm good for it.

  • I ran 3 (very slow) miles at 41 weeks. There's no reason for you to stop exercising now unless you don't feel well!
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I was told to stop running at 4 months (had fainting and cramping issues), but I still workout and I almost 37 weeks. I walk as fast as I can every other day (until I feel faint or cramps) and do a lifting DVD on the non fast walking days.  Then, everyday I just regular walk for about 40 minutes (including the days I have already done a speed walk). I was used to doing p90x and running 3.5 miles 4 times a week so this is a huge decrease, but at least it's something! O yea- I also do a 50 minute yoga dvd about once every 2 weeks.
  • I'm 35 weeks and still exercising (running, etc), my doctor approves of it. I would think you only should stop based upon what your body is telling you (and common knowledge, like not exercising to the point of exhaustion).

Oh, and you're supposed to stop if you have bleeding, cramping or leaking any fluids.

Fair Enough!! Absolutely, you need to heed your doctor's advice; glad you are taking care of the LO; I was just curious!

Hang in there; you're doing great and you'll be back running before you know it!

  • I was working out but now I can barley even walk without pain in the nether-regions. So I am no longer visiting the gym Sad I wish I could to. It hurts to even walk it's that bad.
