3rd Trimester

3D ultrasounds

What was your experience with it? Is it worth the money? And will it turn out decent considering I'm 35 weeks?

Re: 3D ultrasounds

  • We had it done at 30 weeks and it was totally worth the money, but we did it at the OB office and paid for it ourselves. I have heard that beyond 32 weeks it can get kinda crowded to get decent shots of anything, so you may wanna check before paying for it.

  • My experience was GREAT! Totally worth the money and 35 weeks is a perfect time to get one done. I had mine done at 29 weeks (mine is below) and it turned out really good and clear. I live in FL and got a really inexpensive package that included an hour session, 10 photos, a CD with all the photos, and a DVD of the whole ultrasound. We will be able to cherish them forever :) Definitely do it!

  • We got a 3D/4D just yesterday at 38 weeks and 1 day and Im so glad I got to see my baby again. Well worth every penny!!  Very clear and this late in the game they look so much more like a newborn rather than say at our 22 week where he looked really skinny and fragile. I say go for it.

I think it would be worth it to see him (though it's getting closer and closer to my due date). I would be paying for it too, out of pocket, probably somewhere in Seattle (they have a lot of places that specialize in only 3&4D).

But thank you so much, it helps!

  • Totally worth it! It was a lot of fun getting all the pictures and seeing all the crazy things they do in your tummy!! Ours turned out awesome!! One is Below!! :)

I paid out of pocket too. No insurance covers 3D ultrasounds because they are not medically necessary.
  • We went for ours at 25 weeks because that is the earliest they recomment for gender determination here (Southern Ontario). I loved it, I thought it was a great experience. It cost us about $220 for 1/2 hour ultrasound with the DVD and CD of all the pictures.

  • I'm high risk, so all my u/s's are partially in 3D, but most of our pics are only in 2D. Though I love to see LO's face, I know that there is a huge risk factor involved with u/s's that they don't tell you about.

For instance, some studies show that u/s waves cause damage to the cells. The heat from the u/s's can cause internal bleeding and problems with intestines. (Ever wonder why celiac disease is on the rise, as well as so many kids with autism?) A British study shows that u/s's cause a form of brain damage in males, causing normally right-handed boys to become left-handed. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but actually, it shows that if you're supposed to be one and use the other hand, it causes developmental delays.

That said, it's not been "proven beyond all doubt" that this will happen, but it's something to think about before scheduling an unnecessary u/s. Especially one that uses as much heat as a 3D/4D u/s.

  • As it happens, the 1999 "mice" study which showed cell damage had mice, who are approximately 1/3000th the size of a person exposed to the same number of doppler waves as an OB ultrasound over the course of a pregnancy. And even in those cases, the increase in "damage" was only 22%.So I guess if you're having 9000 ultrasounds, watch out.

Additionally, the probe was held stationary for up to 35 minutes, meaning that essentially the entire fetal mouse brain would have been continually exposed to the ultrasound for 35 minutes?in sharp contrast to the duration and volume of the human fetal brain exposed by ultrasound which will typically not linger on a given tissue volume for greater than one minute.

There have been just as many randomized, long term studies of scanned and unscanned HUMANS which show no adverse affect to ultrasound. (Salvesen 1992, Kieler 1998b)

All that being said, I do not (and neither does ACOG) recommend cosmetic and medically unnecessary ultrasounds. I've seen plenty of posts on these boards where someone who had a non-medical ultrasound at one of those mall joints freaked out about an image they didn't understand and that the tech not being medical personnel, could not explain. Most doctors will not look at one of those images as a means of diagnosis, which means that your concern means a whole NEW ultrasound would be performed, for something that was probably a  trick of the light or computer on the original image.

At one of my doctors' offices, ALL ultrasounds are 3d/4d -- I've received 2 of those (one was the NT scan). I've also received 3 other ultrasounds: a confirmation us, one when the doctor couldn't find the HB on her doppler (that one lasted about 15 seconds total), and the anatomy scan. I'm having another  next week, though I'm not sure why. Growth and positioning, perhaps?
