Back pain-contraction ?

So, for the past 1/2 hr or so i have had a lower back ache.  It doesnt come and go, it has been constant.  I have had previous trouble with sciatic nerve pain, but this does feel different.  Has anyone experienced contractions that they feel in their back?  If so, how do you describe it?

Re: Back pain-contraction ?

  • i just asked this to a friend last night- she told me she didn't even realize she was in labor when she had back labor- she used to get a low back ache everytime she needed to have a bm so she just thought she had to use the bathroom really bad. i know that its different for everyone but that was what it was like for her. she said she had a epidural during birth so a pretty pain free experience.

  • I had a severe back cramp at 37 weeks and another one at 38 weeks...but it was not labor, it was just a cramp. Mine lasted for about 15-30 minutes and was extremely painful. It was my lower left side of my back. But I called the Dr. both times, because it is possible to have back labor and it is always better to be safe than sorry. Hope you are feeling better soon :)

  • This is crazy! I just got this same thing today. Except, I have now had mine for over 2 hours. It's just a constant cramp...feels like back menstrual cramps and I was wondering if this was a contraction too!? I also had what I'm assuming were braxton hicks about an hour ago...my who stomach got really tight for about 20 seconds and then released...but the whole time, my lower back has been aching/cramping...I'm really curious!

  • My back labor was pretty obvious.  It wouldn't hurt to call your ob because you're still premature, but I'm sure it's probably just back pain!

  • I have read that "real" contractions start in your back and move around to the front. Hope that helps!
  • Back labor is when the baby's face is facing your tailbone instead of the back of their head.

I had back labor the entire first day I was induced.  The pain was indescribably painful and it made the day a blur.  My husbands favorite line is "don't you remember me rubbing your back... my knuckles were white! .My answer is "no! no! I don't.

That being said, I had a friend with symptoms just like yours and she had here baby a few hours later.

  • I have had lower back pain with disc issues for the last 12 years.  I still knew I was in labor!  It was unlike any other back pain I'd ever felt.
