Well just got back from my doctors appointment and was diagnosed with PCOS.
That explains a lot now about why I have had weight gain and acne and why I haven't been ovulating. I am not really familar with it so anyone that is...you are more than welcome to let me know your stories!
Re: PCOS
First, I'm so sorry about your dx. It was a hard thing for me to hear personally, though it didn't seem to really sink in for me until I went to see a specialist.
Is your doctor going to refer you to a specialist for treatment? Or are you just going to keep on trying on your own?
I don't really have a big story or anything, but I was dx'd with PCOS last Jan or Feb after finally going to see the doctor. He referred me to an RE, who after lots of testing, put me on Clomid. I don't seem to have a severe form of PCOS.. (I don't have a lot of the regular symptoms, just mostly long annov cycles, and the "string of pearl" ovaries), and I don't have insulin resistance, so I have high hopes that the Clomid will do the trick. This is my first cycle doing on meds, so here's to hoping!
I have PCOS and had DD last November and I'm due with #2 in March.
After my initial DX of PCOS in Oct 08, the doc put me on Clomid. It didn't work. What a lot of doctors don't tell you is that with PCOS sometimes Clomid can INCREASE any cysts you have in there making you even less likely to ovulate. 90 something days later into that cycle without ovulating (I wasn't being monitored at all sadly) I finally got AF. Then I saw another doctor and he put me on Metformin along with Clomid for the next cycle and that did the trick. That was cycle #5 in 10 months of TTC.
If I were you I'd ask about monitoring while on the Clomid (by a u/s check) to look for extra cysts or too many follies (can lead to multiples). Clomid shouldn't be taken as the miracle drug because it can have harmful side effects.
After I had DD, I BFed for almost 5 months, took another 2 months to get my first AF, and that 1st cycle I got PG again. So either I got extremely lucky this BFP or my DD kind of fixed my PCOS issues.
GL to you!!
It is a little hard to swallow right now. My obgyn specializes in infertility so he is the one who prescribed me Clomid. Thank you for the advice! I will definitely take all of that into consideration and speak with him about referring me to a RE. But I am not sure if that is what I should do just yet. I guess I really need to do some research and see what the best thing for me is.
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis
I was diagnosed with PCOS in June 2009 after having irregular periods. since we weren't TTC then, I just went on BCP. I went off them in February in anticipation of TTC and confirmed that I do not ovulate and have long cycles that have both been ended by taking Provera.
I was being "treated" by my ob/gyn, which was a mistake. They wouldn't diagnose me as insulin resistant after some b/w came back normal. Yeah, they prescribed the wrong b/w! They didn't want to do anything except have me TTC for a year and then they would do Clomid. I wasn't comfortable with that and went to see an endocrinologist for a second opinion. He diagnosed with as being insulin resistant right off the bat and started me on a combo of Actos and Metformin to control the insulin resistance, regulate my cycles, and hopefully get me to ovulate. He was very confident that I would get pg without clomid. It's been a week and a half since CD1 and starting the meds. Time will tell, I guess!
I would definitely see an RE so that you can be monitored while on Clomid. Also, soulcysters.net is an awesome resource to learn more about PCOS and hear from other women with PCOS.
GL!
Thanks! Yeah he did mention Metformin and something else to me but I can't remember. It is so much information at one time I can't remember all of it! GL with you! I sure hope it works out for you! I will check out that website now! I am so glad to be able to come here and talk with all of you. It has really made me feel better about everything!
I had heard that about PCOS too. Actually when I was dealing with slow BFing in the hospital after DD was born I mentioned to the lactation consultant I have PCOS and her eyes kind of lit up and she wrote it on my chart. (Apparently I should have mentioned that earlier).
I had some supply issues the whole time I BFed. I think it was mostly my own fault though. I wasn't eating as well as I could have been, I had to go dairy and tomato free and struggled to eat for the first few months. I should have been taking more suppliments and seeing an LC more frequently. I plan to do that this time around and I don't foresee any problems at all. (I'm going with the positive outlook!)
TO OP. Within 1 week of being on the Metformin I felt better. I had the middle of the body weight gain, the extra hair growth in weird places like my cheeks/neck area, and acne bad. After a week I felt like my skin was improving, within 2 weeks I felt like my weight gain reversed a teeny bit with no changes in my routine (pants fit better). Then I got my BFP. I'm pretty sure that being on just the metformin would have gotten me PG within a couple cycles if I had skipped the clomid that time.
I have the weight gain in the belly area too. I had a c-section with my DS so I have a lot of fat right above the c-section cut. I have acne and occasionally find longer hairs on my chin and cheeks. I never even thought of PCOS until my doctor just told me I have it. I think it is information overload right now. Haha! I am stressing myself out reading everything about it.
