Itchy Itchy Itchy

For the past few weeks I have been sooo itchy! Mainly my legs & arms. It seems like at first it was just after a shower. Now it is going on more often. I have tried lotions, oils, anii-itch cream& everything I can think of. Doc now has me taking Benadryl. I take it when I feel the itchies coming on with not much relief. Maybe I should take it more regularly? Anyone have any experience with this??

  • Do you have a rash or bumps?

  • I don't mean to scare you but it could be a liver enzyme issue.  I know it is common, one of my friends started feeling the same way around 34 weeks and had blood tests done and it came up on the results and  they were able to take care of it.

  • Nope. I have a few tiny little bumps on back of arms l(i had them as a kid & they faded) but they don't itch.
  • I have read about the liver issue...I am going to mention that specific thing to doc & get them to rule it out if I am still itching like this come next appt on Wednesday. But it seems the Benadryl helps & the women who experience that says that it wont. So I dunno.
  • I have pretty bad eczema so I have a lot of things I will use. But first, laundry detergent is a big source for rashes. The creams you tried do they have a scent? I use vaseline CREAMY problem skin therapy. Also no perfumes. Something that you may find helps the itching a lot is a bag of frozen veg or ice packs.
  • I switched to the Aveeno w/ green cap. That seems to have helped. I haven't changed laundry detergent so hmmm maybe fabric softener. I will check that out and see if maybe that is causing some issues.

It is weird I start to itch about an hour after going to bed and about an hour after waking up. So weird. Then some itching throughout the day but not the same kind of unbearable episodes.

  • I have been experiencing the same kind of itching that you are describing since about 27 weeks.  I was tested for cholestasis (the liver enzyme thing) and that was negative, then went to a dermatologist who took a couple biopsies and said that it was an allergic reaction.  Unfortunately I have no idea what is causing this itcing but it hasn't gone away and it's been 10 weeks now.  Sorry I don't have better news for you, but I would definately recommend getting tested for cholestasis, then if that is negative see a dermatologist - hopefully they can give you some answers.

My BF developed some kind of allergic (histamine) reaction to her pregnancies, it got progressively worse/earlier with each of them (she has three LOs) the only thing that helped was Benadryl.  Apparently in very unusual situations you can become allergic to some or all of the hormones of pregnancy.
