Talking ?

Paige seriously talks up a storm to those she knows.  When she is around strangers - she is DEAD QUIET.  Are your kids like this?!  I don't mind that she is quiet around strangers but it makes me wonder if people think "does she ever talk?"

Another question - this on about pronunciation.  Paige talks well and you can understand her most of the time - or at least I can.  But there are things that drive me nuts.  Like "tar" for car or "quease" for please.  Will she out grow this or should I talk to someone?!  Right now I just pronounce the word the way it should be.

OPINIONS?!

Re: Talking ?

  • I think both of those are pretty normal. Dd says somethings oddly, or uses an incorrect plural/verb agreement etc. I just repeat what she says properly but in the form of a question to make sure i understand her. I think it is too soon to really worry. If she is saying a particular sound incorrectly all the time that may be a different matter.

  • She'll outgrow the pronunciation. Just don't "correct" her by saying "no Paige, it's xxxxx". You can repeat the statement using the correct word though.

As for the being shy around strangers, my kids are like that too. Nothing to worry about!

  • When Cole mispronounces a word, I just try to use the word correctly, back at him, but without pointing out that he did it wrong.  Does that make sense?

Like, he asks, "Can I have some mel-mon-ade?"

Then I'll say,"You want some lemonade?"

He catches on now and notices if I pronounce something differently than he did, and will often try to repeat it correctly now.  I guess he's on to my trick! Wink

  • Saying /t/ for /k/ is called fronting velar sounds (also /d/ may be replaced for /g/) and is a completely normal, age appropriate speech error.  Funny though that she has the "qu" or /kw/ sounds for "please" when she doesn't use /k/ in car.  But all totally normal.  The "pl" in please is just complicated - /l/s, not to mention /l/ blends, are tough!

You are right in just modeling the correct productions.

Around 3, if the car/tar error still exists, you could show her a picture of a car next to a picture of tar, say them, let her watch your mouth and listen to them, and see that when she says "tar" people hear "tar" not "car" - but that is a good while away (I think, need to recheck your ticker)
