When do they outgrow the convertible car seat?

This may be a dumb question but is it an age or a weight requirement for when they move from the convertible car seat to the booster seat?  We already have 3 Britax Marathons for Ava and I am wondering whether we will need to buy more for Katelyn or if Katelyn can use Ava's and Ava will be moving up to a new seat?  Ava is going to be 3 in Nov and is currently 32lbs. TIA!

  • I think there are age/weight/height guidelines, but I confess to not knowing what they are.  That said, Harrison (4-1/2 and 45 pounds) is still in his Britax and comfortable.  I'll keep him there until he's too tall.  (ie. ears at top)

  • The weight restriction for our britax is 65lbs, there is also a guideline based on height which is ears to top and/or distance from shoulders to top.  The strap should be coming from the top if their shoulders get over this then its time to move on...I BELIEVE.  This is from memory.

SC is 4 in Nov and still in our britax at 42" tall and 43lbs.

For our MARATHON.  I would read up on your particular carseat.

  • by 4 and a half we moved to a booster seat.
  • Thanks Brandi, I had a feeling she would stay put for a while since she is no where near the height/weight max.  I guess I should just buy stock in Britax...it sucks they are so pricey but I don't want to skimp when it comes to safety.
  • There are height/weight limits- check your owners manual.  Also, they are safer in the carseat than in the booster so we plan to use our Marathon for Gavin as long as possible for safety reasons. For this reason, we just went ahead and bought a small Roundabout for Sophie.  I figure that by the time she outgrows that, Gavin will have finally outgrown the Marathon and be ready for a booster of some sort.

  • The Britax Marathon goes up to 65 lbs/ 49 inches.

The Britax Frontier starts at 25 lbs and goes up to 85 lbs/ 30-65 inches tall.

Alec is just about 40 inches and we possibly will need another car seat for DH's car this winter.  We are probably going to go with the Frontier for him for that car.  I still plan to keep him in his Marathon in my car.

  • We moved Colin to the Britax Frontier 85 in June and have been really happy with it.  We had 2 Marathons and wanted to move Hayden to them....I didn't want to have 4 Marathons so we moved him up.  I have been really happy with it - it still has the 5 point harness and he is well within the range (2 years and 25 lbs, I think).  That said, he still fits in the Marathon.  He'll be 3 in a few weeks and weighs 38 lbs and is 39 inches tall.
  • You could always get a less expensive but just as safe carseats for the secondary cars.  There are several on the market that are just as safe as the Britax just might not have all the bells and whistles.
