3 names before a last name??? Be Honest!

I can't believe I'm even entertaining this idea, but I'm kind of stuck on what to do.

We've chosen the name Sawyer for our son.  DH didn't love it as much as I did, but he likes it and we've agreed that's his name.  I wanted to name him Sawyer Jule (Jule was my maternal great-grandfather).

DH's father passed away when we'd been dating about 6 months.  His name was J.B.  Initials only - they don't stand for anything.  Why??? I have no idea.  DH wanted to name our first born after him by giving those same initials.  Claire was my #1 choice for Blaire.  I seriously came up with her name by thinking 'Claire rhymes with Blaire, and Jacquelyn sounds good with that'.  So her name is Jacquelyn Blaire.  I love her name, and I elnded up loving Blaire even better than Claire so it was perfect.

I flat-out vetoed the J.B. initials for my son.  One, b/c I'm not a fan of most of the 'J' names he threw out, but also b/c I already named one child after my FIL, I really don't want to name another one.  So, Chris thought we could name him Sawyer JB LASTNAME.  WTF???  He does not hear how ridiculous that sounds.

So, realizing I'm getting nowhere very fast, I'm thinking of telling him we can name him Sawyer Jule B-------- LASTNAME.  As long as it 'goes-together' in some way, shape, and form.  Like Benjamin or something, IDK.  What I won't tell him is that eventually Sawyer will probably drop that name anyway.  Or, my luck, he'll want to go by J.B.

ugh!  And, BTW, how do you even get something monogrammed with initials when there are 4 of them?  My school secretary is wanting to monogram a diaper bag for me.

  • Well, I am Catholic and technically have 4 names also (first, middle, confirmation and last name). No one ever goes by the confirmation name. I personally would not give my child 4 names. I would say our dd was named after your father and now I want to name our son after my great grandfather. It only sounds fair to me!

If you did get monogramming, you would delete the 2nd middle name.

  • Another thought! On applications they never ask for 2 middle names so how would you put the 2nd one on there? There is usually just about 8 blanks so it prob would not fit. I think the 2nd middle name would get dropped most of the time!

  • Ian has 2 middle names, so he has 4 names. I dont see a big deal. He in essence has a 3 syllable middle name.
  • I have 3 middle names on my birth cert. It's not a big deal.

I know someone who gave their little boy a middle name of 2 initials for the same exact reason (his paternal grandfather just has a 2 initial name-they don't stand for anything). So his name is first name, 2 initials, last name. I would think you could do a monogram with 4 initials, just do all block letters the same size, I really don't think it is a big deal.

When you do initials they are in order they are said. When you get monogramming they are mixed differently so I don't think you would be able to use the 2nd middle name. It is not that big of a deal and I would do what you want.

What I want is to not have to name my son after his paternal grandfather! LOL!  Of all things to be worried about, I'm sitting here worried about monogramming.  good grief!  Embarrassed

  • i would just say you Father got our first kiddo and then i would like this next one to be after my grandfather.
  • It's not that big of a deal to have 2 middle names.  I have two middle names from birth and if you count my confirmation name (Catholic), I then have 3 middle names.

As for the two given middle names - I've never had an issue with the initials, monograms, government forms, etc.  It's my legal name and treated as such.   I see nothing wrong with giving your baby 2 middle names to get that JB initial that is so important to your DH.

eta:  EVERY documentation that I have includes my two middle name initials.  I've had monogramming done...with my two middle names.... It 's really not a big deal.  It's never been a problem..    My long last name, however, was more of an issue than middle names.

  • It's not ideal but I would do it to make it work.

I wanted to name my phantom baby girl Rainah Claire Rose Last name. I had told my mom, Rosalee, that I wanted my daughter's middle name to be Rose. Well Rainah Rose sounded too sing songy to me. Claire was our second choice so I was going to make it a three name before last name. My husband hated the idea. I told him it's not that much of an issue to make it an issue. I ended up with a second son anyway, so it didn't matter.

  • I have two middle names, and it's never been an issue. I have things with all four initials, I have things with jut first and last, it just depends. Also, on most forms it just has one initial spot, so the second one doesnt come up that often, sure sometimes they can't fit well on forms, but eh. I've seen worse. Stand your ground, you have already dedicated one childs name, you don't need both.
  • My dd was going to have her first name and my mother's name as her middle name making her SAP.  But I'm hyphenated and my mother died a few wks before dd was born and I was a bit concerned that dd wouldn't have my last name in any way.  I didn't want to cut out my mother's name for sure.  So she became SACP.  It has been a bit of an issue at times because my name is hyphenated that ppl assume dd is hyphenated as well.  When she was hospitalized last month they couldn't pull up the reports because they were listed under C-P instead of just P.  But overall, I'm glad I gave her the names.
  • I have 3 middle names. Don't do this to your son! My name is constantly laughed about amongst my family and friends. I don't even know or remember any of the people I was named after. All my names don't fit on my license or my SS card. I just use the first one most of the time.
