3rd Trimester

NBR: Sisters College

I get a call from my mom, who i can tell has been crying. She tells me that my sis needs $500 for school TOMORROW, and that she will need 2 post dated checks for the other half, to even get registered.

I call sis, who is boo hooing her eyes out. she tells me that she went to register and FASFA has changed. So basically she has no financial aid. She was supposed to fill out a 19pg survey and some other things, none of which she was aware. She tells me that she doesn't have the money to pay me back, or the money to get books. If she doesn't take certain classes this semester she will be set back an entire year of school. So she will be going 9 years instead of 8. I couldn't let that happen, I want her to be successful.

I don't mind lending mom, or sis the money. I have enough to cover it in savings. It is just giving me a little panic attack because what if something comes up and I don't have it. It seems like smooth sailing then BAM something hits you from left field. Also, DH is neurotic about money, when I told him about the situation, I didnt ask I just told him what I was doing. But I just KNOW that I'm going to have to hear about it later. UGH.

Re: NBR: Sisters College

  • My sister has had to bail me out financially and though it took a while for me to pay her back, I've done it. FAFSA blows royally, so I understand... and if it wasn't school, it'd be the car or something else. Don't worry, it will all even out in the wash. I know the feeling though (from both sides).

  • is this going to put you in a position that if something happens you dont have a good savings built up? if so then i understand DH's view. its good you want to help your sister, but she should have gotten on top of this before she had one day to do something. i hope everything works out.

  • Most schools have emergency funds to help students in time of sudden need.

  • That was incredibly generous and nice of you!  My sister is in her last semester of school, and she is kinda in the same situation.  My parents have zero money, so she is taking out a private loan.  I'm up to my armpits in student loan debt myself, so I understand the struggle.  I wish I could help my sister out, like you did for yours.

  • That really sucks!  Can she not still complete it?  I work for a university and our online FAFSA applications don't close out for 10-11 until June 30, 2011.  I know state deadlines can be earlier, though.  Sure, she'd still have to pay upfront but, if there's still time to file & after her financial aid comes in, she should receive a refund check.  Have her talk to the financial aid counselor and/or VFAO (if they use it).  I wouldn't give up yet.
