White center to nipple?? VERY painful

I have been on google trying to find out what this could be but no luck so I thought I would ask you ladies!

The center of my one nipple is white and nursing is extremely painful. Even when not nursing I get a shooting pain through the center from time to time.  Also, my nipple never seems to 'relax' and is always elongated and erect. I tried warm compresses and I am using lots of Lansinoh to try to heal. I am not cracked or bleeding but I sure am sore! I have decided to take DS off that side for now and pump until I am not in so much pain and I can get this figured out.

Does anyone have any ideas or advise? I have a LC to call but trying to avoid the $100 co-pay if I can!  Thanks!

Susan

  • Could it be a milk blister?  I have one that keeps coming back and it really hurts...kind of burns and stings. There is a photo and some treatment suggestions in this link:

  • I have teh same thing and have been told by a LC that I have Raynaud's. Here's a link to the info on it: https://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipple-blanching.html. Scroll down to where it says "Raynaud's of the nipple."

Warm compresses is about all you can do, plus some vitamin supplements. I've been dealing with it for 6 weeks or so and it still hurts :( I hope this isn't what you have... I did initially do a round of B6 and magnesium. LC told me 200mg of B6 a day for 4 days, and then just 20mg a day after that, along with 1 magnesium supplement each day. I've been bad at taking them as I should though.

Thanks for the link but I don't think that's it. My nipple looks white on the inside and is flush with the tip. Its almost like the skin is discolored rather than a raised blister and it is pure white. i will look around that site. it looks really informative! Thanks again!

  • Sounds like blanching to me.  I get that from time to time especially if I nurse in the living room near the AC vent.

Interesting about the AC!! I nurse in bed at night with a nursing pillow and the AC is a bit much on me. I will try turning it down while nursing (even though I sweat like crazy when nursing!) and see if that helps. I have a warm compress on it now and have had 2 pumping sessions so DS doesn't feed on that side and it is feeling a little better. I am waiting for a call back from the LC now.

    Thanks!

  • Yeah, I was reading up on the R syndrome a couple of weeks ago and there's something about going from warm (inside LO's mouth) into the cold air.

  • Great post. I've had that and figured out the ceiling fan was making it hurt more. Odd.
  • sounds like vasosoasm/raynaud's to me - i have it too ---you need to stay warm and keep your body temp up
  • Thanks, everyone!

I had a successful feeding on that nipple by changing the feeding position and turning off the AC while feeding! I will also continue with the warm compresses and Lansinoh and hopefully it will improve soon. I was getting so frustrated since I am pain free on the other side and all of a sudden I ran into this issue!

    Yes

  • Sounds like Raynaud's (vasospasms) but Nifedipine (a BP med) worked wonders for me. I had to educate my ob and ped about it and show them an article I found from the Pediatrics journal and Dr. Jack Newman's website in order to get the script as neither had heard of it in breastfeeding.
