Help me- Back Pain

My lower back is killing me already and I've got a LOOOONG way to go!  It started out as sciatica (which I always have- pregnant or not).  But then I over did it a couple weekends ago and really messed it up.  Had a massage last Tuesday which helped relieve the sciatica but the next day, I felt something "pop" and the pain is getting worse everyday now.  I'm doing all my normal sciatica stretches, applying heat pretty much all day, and trying to maintain good posture.  I know I can't go on like this (people at work can see the pain all over my face when I'm walking around) and I will have to call the OB but is there anything else I should be trying at home to alleviate this pain?  I don't want the nurse to suggest something obvious that I haven't thought of.

Re: Help me- Back Pain

  • Well everything you are doing is what I was going to suggest. I'd definitely call and you might even think about going to see a PT for it. I would think your OB could write a prescription to see a PT so insurance would cover it. And hugs!

  • The only things that seem to help me are heating pads and tylenol--which are what my OB suggested.  What about a pregnancy massage or accupunture?

ooops--Pregnancy brain--I just remembered you tried massage already!

  • I know exactly how you feel!! even before getting pregnant I already had back issues. Here are a couple of things you can do. I called my OB and they were no help at all, they just kept telling me that it's normal...blah!

*try going to a chiropractor, they can adjust your neck and back even if you are pregnant.

    * stand next to your bed and place both hands on the edge and lean down as he you are looking at the floor letting your head and back rest with your feet apart

    * sleep with a pillow between your legs

*Use those massage chairs that vibrate and give heat at the same time. I don't have one, but a friend had just the back part that you can adjust to any chair and it work wonders for me.

  • I swear by my chiro, he absolutely works miracles.  I would be absolutely miserable without him.

  • I am having some pretty severe back pain already this pregnancy as well.  I have been seeing a chiropractor and getting massages.  Here is what she recommended.  Don't sit for too long.  Try getting up and moving around every hour.  When you are at home, sit on one of those exercise balls and rotate your hips in both directions, do figure 8's, move your hips forward and back.  This will loosen up the muscles around your hips.  Also, she recommended ice - 20 minutes on then rest at least an hour before reapplying.  Not sure where you live or if chiropractic is covered by your insurance.  I see Regina Syed in Alpharetta.  I also have seen Greg Grimm with the Joint in Alpharetta and he is great too - just doesn't have the massage included in his therapy but charges around $20/visit WITHOUT insurance.
