4 month wakeful period

Talk to me about the 4 month "wakeful" period.  My LOs are 4 months and over the past week their sleeping has gone downhill. They are waking up at random times during the night crying I don't feed them just try to soothe them back to sleep. I am on antibiotics and steriods due to and ear infection and mastitis so I am going to wait and see what happens after finishing those, hoping they will return to their previous sleep routine! Any suggestions

Re: 4 month wakeful period

  • I also am experiencing this.  My LOs were sleeping through the night for 2 months, and then all of a sudden waking at 3am.  we're also soothing back to sleep.  They'll be 5 months in a week, and are starting to sleep a little better, but I'd love for them to STTN again!
  • Its so funny that all the stuff that we've gone through that involves sleep deprivation on my part feels like such a blur. But I do remember going through the 4 month wakeful period and I think I even posted about it here. After sttn for 4 weeks, the boys started taking turns waking up at least once a night. But, I think the worst part of the 4 month wakeful period was the nap boycott. Right around then is when we transitioned from napping in the swing or bouncy at random times, to trying to start a nap schedule in their cribs. The good news is that I think the waking up in the middle of the night only lasted for about a week or two. As far as the naps go, the only advice I have is to be really consistent. Put them down in the crib at the same time every day until they really get used to it. By the time the boys were about 5 1/2 months old, they were taking a good nap in the morning and in the afternoon and both were in their cribs.

I hope you are feeling better soon. Ugh, an ear infection and mastitis, huh? Hopefully once you are back to your normal self, the babes will get back to a good sleep schedule for you. Good luck!
