Going down to one nap ?

When did your LO start transitioning to just one nap a day? I think Landon is telling us he only wants one nap. He has been having nap strikes for the morning nap the past couple of days. Jalen on the otherhand, when I mention nap time, he grabs his blanket and paci and lays down. He loves his naps!

Re: Going down to one nap ?

  • We transitioned down to one nap this summer when Mady was about 17-18 months old.  She kind of let us know by taking two very short naps and then being cranky. There are times when I know she needs to take two naps still, but most of the time she is down to one longer nap in the afternoon.

  • Jocelyn went to one nap a week ago when she moved up to a new room at daycare that allows them to take a longer nap mid-day. I think she was probably ready to transition about 3 weeks ago but daycare's awkward nap scheduling forced us to keep a late-day nap until she moved up. Now she sleeps about 2 hours from 12-2 and then goes to bed at 8:00.

  • Andrew has been at 1 nap for a while.  He seemed a little too young for it at first, and was really tired, but just refused a 2nd nap so it forced us to one!

My sleep book says a little over half of kids are down to 1 nap by 15 months!

  • Landon sounds like Andrew! I thought he was too early too, but he just does not want to take his nap.

To help we made his nap at 11:00 at first. It was the latest he could make it. He would sleep a really long time (like 2-3 hours) every day.

Gradually he slept shorter, then we moved it later and later.  Now he's doing down between 12:30 and 1 (depending how tired he is) and almost always sleeps 1.5 hours.

We also put him to bed earlier at night!

Andrew was tired, but did better than I expected.  We really didn't have a choice though b/c if we tried 2 (one morning) then he'd refuse the afternoon nap and be a ball of fire later.
