Umbilical Hernia

My poor baby boy has an umbilical hernia...he is 6 weeks old.  We went to the doc and she said it should heal itself by the time he is 3 or 4, if not he will need surgery.   Anyone experience this and if so what was the outcome?
Thanks!

Like a really enourmous outie...it is soft when pressed, unless he's crying it's hard and sticks out more.

DS has it too.  they say it's VERY common because of the gap around the umbilical cord where it is attached in utero.

It doesn't cause him any pain and only bulges when he's hysterical.

my DS (who is 21 months old now) had an umbilical hernia and an epigastric hernia, he had to get the epigastric one repaired so they went ahead and repaired the umbilical one too! but his looked like a big outtie too. when I had DD (almost 2 weeks now) that was my first question is if she had the epigastric hernia. wont be able to tell the umbilical til later.
