CD newbie- what to buy?

We have finally decided to make the switch over to CDs, but it is so intimidating! There are so many different brands/ types out there.

We don't have a ton of money because I'm a SAHM, so I want to try prefolds (I've heard they're less expensive...) and just buy a few to try out to make sure we want to CD.

I tried the gdiapers with disposable inserts and really did NOT like them. The inserts kept bunching up in the front, could only hold one good pee in them, and they were a pain to put on and switch inserts. I've heard good things about the bumgenius 4.0 and the Fuzzybuns. What's the difference?

What advice/ recommendations do you have? Where would you start? I would like to go to a store and buy a small stash vs. buying online because my parents want to buy the first set for us and they're here from overseas so want to use cash... TIA!!

Re: CD newbie- what to buy?

  • If you want to try out prefolds....the ladies around here LOVE the ones from green mountain diapers.  There are also several sites that do diaper trials where you can try out several different kinds....jillians diapers is the one I see posted the most.

BG and Fuzzibunz are both pocket diapers.  They have a waterproof liner and an insert, typically microfiber, that you stuff into a pocket.  So unlike the Gdiapers you change out the whole thing every time instead of reusing the cover and just replacing the liner.  Pocket diapers seem to be one of the more popular kinds of cloth....people like them because you can adjust the absorbancy by adding more inserts for overnight or heavy wettters.  If you like the gdiaper concept where you can use cloth OR disposable, there are better systems like GroVia or Flip.  Most of the ladies on this board have had bad experiences with Gdiapers and don't recommend them for the reasons you mentioned.

As far as somewhere local...no clue.  I lived in Cbus for 10 years but long before I was thinking about cloth diapers!  Maybe try a google search, I'm sure there has to be at least one store in the area.

Check our the EFF blog for more info on CDing.  It's been a huge help to me!

  • So I was bored and got curious where there was a store in Columbus...perhaps I will send my MIL there to shop.  Haha.  Anyways, this is the only one I was finding, looks pretty decent though...called Sprout Soup.

  • I use softbums exclusively for my twins.  I love them.  You can reuse the covers and just snap in new inserts.  Check them out.

No problem!  And you can get them from BRU and Target...well some of the brands, but they are online only at this point.
