B-day present for a one year old?

I'm going to a friend's house for her son's first birthday next weekend. For those of you with children about that age, what kind of gift is approriate and would be appriciated? It can't be anything too big because I am on a tight budget. TIA!

My DD loves books, she would rather be read to all day long then play with any of her toys so that's another option as well.

Anything that comes in a really big box... lol. I have tons of little cousins and they would much rather play with the box than the toys lol.

They have some great, inexpensive little tonka trucks for that age. My son is 2 and still loves playing with his that he got at that age.

This! Or just about any type of car toy. We have a lot of cars and trucks around here and DS loves to play with them.
