Mommies with Factor V Leiden

After having my first child I had a blood clot and found out I had Factor V Leiden.  My daughter is almost 3 years old and we just found out we are pregnant with baby #2.  My question is do I need to be on a blood thinner during pregnancy or not?  I live in Salisbury Maryland and would like to know if there are any good doctors around here or Baltimore that deal with Factor V Leiden?

I would say yes.  I was diagnosed with homo FVL after 3 m/c with no history of blood clot.  I am on 40 mg of Lovenox until week 36 where I go to Heparin and then back to Lovenox after delivery for 6 weeks.  Since you've had a clot I would think your doctor would really want you on the Lovenox ASAP.  I began the day I got the BFP.

I was started on Lovenox as soon as they confirmed the pregnancy.  I've been on 60mg/day since week 8 (maybe 10?).  They're going to do the same thing as the pp and start me on Heparin once it gets closer to me delivering since it's easier to reverse than Lovenox, and then back on the Lovenox for another 6 weeks after delivery. (you're actually more likely to get a clot after delivery, who knew?).

Yes, you definately need to get on blood thinner ASAP, because not only could you develope a blood clot in your body, you could also develope one in the placenta; which would kill the baby. Not trying to scare you, but it's important that you get on Lovenox especially since you have already gotten a blood clot in your previous pregnancy.

Oh, just wanted to add that my high-risk OB is the one who prescribed the Lovenox and is taking care of everything related to it.  I've seen a hematologist in the past, but he knows what he's doing since this something they deal with a lot.

This is the same plan my OB put me one when my pregnancy was confirmed.  I am no longer on the lovenox, but only because I developed a large subchorionic hemorrhage during first tri and the lovenox was no longer a good idea.  The hemorrhage eventually resolved itself, after a lot of bedrest, but my OB and MFM specialist both think its best to keep me off the Lovenox/Heparin ( and thank goodness, cause ITS $$$$ expensive!)

Yes, I will be in the same boat as you when/if I get PG again (clot after 1st pregnancy, diagnosed with FVL).  You most certainly need to be on Lovenox.  You also need a high-risk OB and a hemotologist to help manage your dosage.

I live in Baltimore, and am happy to share the names of my docs with you.  Feel free to PM me if you like.

    Hi there,

While I dont have FVL I do live in Baltimore.  I see the Perinatologist at St. Joseph Medical Center in Baltimore, and love them!  But, I am pretty certain you have to be referred to them by your OB, I dont think you can just make an appointment.

You need to go on a blood thinner asap.  I found out I had fvl after a m/c.  My OB is fairly sure that is what caused it.  The fact that you've already had a pg related blood clot is confirmation that you really need it for your health and for the baby.

You really need to get on something asap.  I have factor II mutation, similar to yours. I found out after I lost my baby at 30 weeks bc of a clotted placenta and a dvt 3 days after giving birth.  I recommend taking any precaution that you can, wouldn't want anyone to lose a LO like I did.  GL with your pg.

Yes,  I would definately like the name of your doctors in Baltimore.  I live in Salisbury so I am not sure if they have a high-risk OB and a hemotogist here but I will find out this week.  Thank you so much!!
