Significant hair loss during pregnancy?????

I've always heard that you lose a lot of hair after delivery, but did any of you have significant hair loss during pregnancy?  A friend of mine is pg with twins and she's nervous about the amount of hair she's losing (through out the day).  Her dr ran a few tests and her thyroid is fine as well as her iron levels. I told her I'd ask on here.  TIA!

Re: Significant hair loss during pregnancy?????

  • I lost my hair AFTER I had the baby. During pregnancy, my hair and nails were beautiful. I dont remember losing much at all while I was pregnant.

  • ditto Lauren. I have the best hair ever during pregnancy! After birth though, so much fell out it was crazy.
Is she taking a good prenatal vitamin?
  • Yes, she's taking vitamins, eating healthy, etc.

  • I've heard the women have amazing hair / nails during pg.  Well, I've noticed I do have LESS hairloss than normal, but it isn't necessarily growing at rapid speed or anything.  And my nails are pretty brittle lately, and I've actually been keeping them manicured.

    Every body is just different.

Hair has a particular life cycle. During pregnancy, the "hair loss" part of the cycle is usually stalled and that is why hair normally does not fall out as much during pregnancy. Postpartum hair loss usually comes with a vengeance at around 3-4 months. But everyone is different and your friend did the right thing telling her doc.

  • Make sure her doctor checked all of the thryroid studies. In derm, we check all of them and most peds/OB's only check a few. I actually had this conversation today with my OB b/c she only checked TSH, T3, and T4...my hair has been falling out like crazy and I've been losing weight despite being 18 wks pregant...so I had her add on the other ones and turned out I have hyperthyroidism (thus causing the hair and weight loss)

  • My hair has been falling out like crazy! I thought I was gonna have the opposite effect too. I look at the front of my head an I can totally tell! It's driving me nuts. However, on the rest of my body, my hair grows at lightening speed. I shave my legs and I feel like an hour later I have stubs already!
