Clicky Poll: TV in your child's room

My Mom wants to get Aidan a tv for his room and to keep things 'fair' said she would get one for Evan too.  I'm not pleased but I'd like to know if I'm alone in this.

Re: Clicky Poll: TV in your child's room

  • No way.  If she is in her room she is either reading or using her imagination and playing.  If she wants to watch tv she can do it in the family room and we will all watch something together as a family.  If we are watching something we either don't want her to watch or she wants to watch a movie that we don't want to watch then she can go into our room and watch it.  I do not see a reason to ever have a tv in a kid's room.

  • I voted yes, but not until they are much much older than your kids.   I'm thinking like middle school and up.  And then, it still depends on the kid and the house.  Our current house is small and I would not add another TV because when there is more than one TV on I can hear them both and it makes me crazy.  We have a TV in the living room, one in our bedroom and an under-counter one in the kitchen, that's plenty.

No.  My list of reasons is to long to write at the moment.

    Same here.

  • Amelia can have one some day...when she's 10-12.  She has already asked for one because her cousin (ie: best buddy) has one in her room.  I'm sorry, but a 3 year old does not need a tv in their room.  Amelia will have one in her playroom at some point later this year or early next year...whenever I want to spend the money.

Edit: I should say that the playroom is open to the family room and kitchen so she'll be monitored and it will be used as a computer as well...ie: educational stuff.

  • I voted no. I had one in my room growing up, probably starting around 10 or 11. I was a ridiculously responsible student though. I still probably wouldn't have given me one, but I wasn't complaining! It was great.

We have a TV in the game room upstairs and one in the living room downstairs. To me, that means kids can watch one while we watch another (when they get older).

I totally agree. Until they get into middle school there is absolutely no need to have a TV in their room, IMO.

  • Ya know...  I NEVER NEVER thought about getting my son a television in his room.  AND I also said I would NEVER NEVER do it.  DH and I agreed.  NEVER.

I am eating it.  I have and suppose am thinking about a small tv in his room NOW>  yep. at THREE years old.  Right now, he goes to sleep with me. We are still a cosleeping family.  He goes to sleep with Chuggington every single night.  So...  I have thought, to get him into his own bed, I might consider a television for that one purpose.

That said... He couldn't turn it on himself.  He couldn't just go in there and watch it.  It would be to help him fall to sleep for half an hour before bedtime.

(ps, I don't have one in my car and don't foresee' ever having one.   I like that he has to entertain himself in the car.  :) )

  • Not until middle school-ish.

i would possibly consider a tv in their room when they're in high school, but not earlier.

  • I voted "No." I didn't have a tv in my room until I was in the dorm in college and DH and I don't have one in our bedroom now. I think the one in the living room and the one we will get for the play area upstairs will be enough.

God only knows how DH and I live with only 1 tv right now.  Wink

  • I didn't have a tv in my room until I was a junior in high school.  Even then, I hardly ever used it.  I think DS will probably get a tv but not until he's in high school.  Honestly though...the only reason he'll probably get one is if DH and I decide we want a different tv for the living room.  We are cheapos when it comes to electronics so I can't see us spending the money for a new tv.

  • No, we don't even have one in our room. We only now have 2 TVs in our house because one came with the house we just bought. So now there's one in the playroom upstairs.

  • I'm gonna sound like a big fat prude, but I don't think I'll ever let him have a TV in his room.  The stuff that's on TV now is awful and I'd like to somewhat monitor what he's watching.

I'll join you in the bad parent club. We got him one earlier this month. It's on his tall dresser, the remote stays there and I put a Baby Einstein on when he goes to sleep. I'm ok with it.

I may or may not have bought the same TV Kimmer has for Avery's room.  We don't plan to hook up the cable.  We'll just use it for DVDs.  I want my TV back and I want her to start sleeping in her own bed again.

  • Nope. I didn't have a tv in my room until I went to college and we had one in the dorm room. I never had a TV at home.

Our kid will not have one either.

  • I didn't have a tv until high school and that is the earliest I will let my kids have one. They will probably have computers anyway, so TV is just another distraction and ANOTHER thing to have to take away when they are grounded (and I can already tell you my boys will be grounded a lot based on how often T is in time out :-/ ).

  • i've been reading a lot about this...for school papers...but based on my readings preschool kids 2 hours screening time (tv/computer/etc) a day

maybe u can just tell gma this...(i don' know how old ur son is)

i didn't watch tv till i was 7....when we finally moved to the USA

  • We don't plan on letting the kids have TVs in their rooms, ever.  Hopefully we will eventually have a house with enough common space to be able to have two televisions, so they'll have one to watch their own stuff on.  But I've always been of the mind that TVs don't belong in bedrooms.  My sister and I had a little black and white dial TV in our bedroom when we were elementary/middle school age, and the only thing I even remember watching was Saturday Night Live and Solid Gold.  (And I always fell asleep during the musical numbers of SNL!)  Didn't have one in H.S., and the only time I had one since then was in my college dorm.

  • No TVs for us. I was never allowed a TV. I'm not sure if DH was or not, I can't remember.

That said, we'd probably move a small TV into her bedroom if she were, say, bedridden and sick. I remember getting a small TV in my room when I had pneumonia and couldn't really go sit and watch TV in the den. But that's different.

Of course, we're not sure we even want a computer in our kids room, so there you go.
