GI- endoscopy, biopsy, bravo ph probe?

Aiden had follow up with GI today.  He wants to do a sedated endoscopy, biopsy, and bravo ph probe.  Aiden has had the regular ph probe- this one sounds better bc aiden wont have a tube.  But, the doc wants to do the procedure the day before his 1st b.day party.  If your LO had this done were they irritable the day after?  I want to try and push it back another week- but he is pretty booked and he wants it done pretty soon.  Any info would be great!  THANKS!

ps- if your LO had the surgery to correct or help reflux...did it work?  i have mixed feelings about procedure- we dont even know if its necessary.  thats why we are doing these tests. thanks again!

  • Hi there!  I can't speak for all of your LO's procedures, but Jacob had a sedated endoscopy in December (he was about 9 months old).  And he did wonderfully.  To be honest, later that day he seemed to be 100% back to normal.  You could tell that he was a little more hesitant to eat his solids because perhaps his throat hurt from the tube, but other than that...he was perfect.  He also had a biopsy done at the same time.

Everything with his testing indicated that he did have reflux, but that most of his feeding issues we psychological.  So, we started to work with a feeding specialist.  The specialist, coupled with growing out of his reflux several months later, were the keys for us and now he's great!

Thanks!  That's great to hear!  LO has reflux (we have done a ph probe in the past) and milk protein allergy.  The specialists are thinking he may need the surgery to help the reflux.  Our LO also has feeding/swallow therapy- some is aspiration related and major oral defensiveness.  The docs were all hoping he would outgrow his reflux by one year- hasnt happened yet...hey we still have 2 weeks.  haha  thanks again! I just dont want him to be cranky for his b.day party!  I hope they can push the procedure back a week.  :)

  • My DS had an upper endoscopy about a month ago to do a biopsy to diagnose him with Celiac Disease. He is 27 months and was totally back to himself by the next day. I agree with the pp that your LO might be a little cranky immediately afterwards and a bit hesitant to eat. The only reason I might reschedule if I were you is that it's really stressful for you and I wouldn't want to go through that and then host a bday the next day. Good luck to you and your family.

Thanks- yeah I think it will be stressful.  Still waiting for them to call me with the availability.  I am going to try and push for the following week. Thanks again!

  • My son had 2 done it was not bad at all. His first was done about 9 or 10 months and the last was done at 18 months. He was fine the next day he was sleepy the day he had it done but after that fine. We found it very helpful to do the test more so the last one. We found he severe reflux and was upped his meds which was only cause he was doing his test with both a GI and ENT. Good luck with  your sons test.
