Pre-School and Daycare

When you were a kid...

what did you get for dessert?

Dessert was always a special occasion in our house growing up - definitely did not happen every day, and when it did, we'd get a few M&Ms, a cookie from the bulk dept. at the grocery store, or sometimes a peanut butter spoon!

How often do you give DC dessert?

We're trying to keep it only occasionally for DD too; maybe twice a week -  a popsicle or a chocolate chip or a cookie once in a while.  She's really content with fruit for dessert too - watermelon or berries.

  • We had ice cream or frozen yogurt. We do popsicles and ice cream now. DS#2 doesn't like them, so he doesn't eat any.

  • My favorite memories of when I was a kid are baking with my mom. So DD gets to bake with me...and she gets to lick the spoon. So I guess we do dessert when we have time to bake.

Licking the spoon!!!  Yes, I used to do that too... and licking the beaters when my mom made mashed potatoes!

  • AS a kid dessert was for special occasions, Shabbat dinner, b-days, parties, holidays and things like that.  My grandma worked in a Jewish bakery until I was around 10 so we did have the yummy bakery cookies in the house about once a week but my mom limited when we could eat them and how many.  We limited desserts to special times and its not an everyday thing by far.  We also do fruit a lot for dessert or as part of the meal.

  • Growing up, we had a lot of ice cream treats and popsicles. But it was never consistent that we had anything for dessert.

We're pretty random with dessert and treats, too. DH and I like to cook and bake, so if we make cookies or brownies, she gets to share them with us. DH likes to have a few M&Ms after dinner if we have them around, and he'll give her some. One of DD's favorite things is to "share treat with Dadda." :)

Occasionally we'll go get ice cream or I'll make her an ice cream cone at home. Or she might get a pudding cup. It tends to be the kind of thing where she'll get a sweet treat for a few days in a row until they run out, and then nothing until the next time we bake or buy a treat. We don't keep them around all the time.
