2 month shots

The girls are having theirs on Tuesday.  Do you ladies have any advice on how to handle this with twins?  I'm not sure what to expect during/after.

Re: 2 month shots

  • bring someone else with you so each can hold a baby.  nurse or bottle feed right after to soothe them.  its sad but we do it to protect them!  good luck
  • Give them some Tylenol two hours prior.  I think that's right.   Emerson always slept A LOT after her shots.

It'll break your heart the first time but, you are doing the very best thing you can do for them!

My clinic actually told me specifically no Tylenol before the appointment because they have to take their temps.  I guess there can be adverse affects if they are sick with a fever and get the shots.  I think they're okay to have it after though.  Was anyone else told this?

Ditto this.  And the Tylenol I think is just 1/2 hr before the shots, though some studies indicate that giving Tylenol the day of shots can reduce the vaccines' effectiveness so you might want to actually hold off and see if your LOs need it.

And LOs' reactions can really vary; Will was fussy for several hours after the 2m shots. Alex was inconsolable from the time of the shots (around 3 p.m.) until about 8 or 9 a.m. the next morning. It was rough. :( BUT since then it hasn't been nearly as bad and the fussiness has been more transient. Hopefully your LO will be OK but I just wanted to prepare you to have help if necessary!

I haven't heard that, but I don't remember our pedi's office ever taking our LOs' temp at well visits (maybe just as newborns?). Not sure if that's unusual.

  • Mine slept for practically 2 days straight.  It was heaven

  • it's helpful to have another person to hold/feed a baby if necessary- but as for the shots- if you go in there calm, likely the babies will be calm about it, too.

my boys have never had issues with shots... maybe cry for a minute, if that long.  It's quick and not very painful - i think parents who get freaked out about it make it worse for the babies... they sense your tension/stress.

some docs recommend tylenol before- but now they are saying it might reduce the effect of the vaccine- so I don't give it until after the vaccine and only IF they are getting a fever (which is not that uncommon and not worrysome).

  • I agree with being calm about it, but also don't blame yourself if your LO still gets really upset. Some kids are just more sensitive/affected differently by the vaccines both physically and emotionally. (Which would explain why my two reacted so differently--and always have reacted very differently to doctor's visits and many other events--even though they experienced the same situation at the same time, same age, same parents.)

  • Mine screamed/cried when they got them. Instantly calmed down when we picked them up.  Slept till the next feeding, ate, slept till the next feeding and then both fussed for about 2 hours (had fevers), gave tylenol and they slept again.  Totally better the next day!
  • It wasn't as bad as I anticipated!  They each screamed for a minute and I fed each one afterwards and then they passed out!!  If you're going to be by yourself, have one of the nurses help you out as much as you need (holding one baby, while you get situated etc.)

The boys had their 4 month shots on Friday and I was more nervous for them since the boys are so much more aware of their surroundings.  The same thing, cried for a minute then ate and passed out.  They were crankier the next day, but nothing too out of the norm.

Good luck!  And I agree with the PPers, stay calm, it'll help your girls out.
