Baby Names

WWYD?

I come from a very small family.A 1-year old in the family is named Fiona. I really want to name DS #2 Finn (I just like the name for a boy). Would you do it if it were you or would you pick a different name? Just want to hear your opinions. DH likes the name too and thinks it doesn't matter what anyone else in the family is named but I know that my family won't be happy if I were to use it. Wwyd?

Re: WWYD?

  • I agree with your DH. YOUR child's name shouldn't be a concern of even close family. I know cousins Cadence and Cade. My SIL is using her cousin's name for her DS. If I have a girl, I'm using my good neighbor's name. If it's a boy, it'll be my brother's/dad's name (even though it's not because of/after them). Fiona and Finn are different names. They'll be different people and similar letters don't mean much of anything.
  • Fiona nd Finn are different names, so if it were me and I loved the name I'd go with it!

    I agree with this.

  • Use it. It shouldn't matter what your family thinks. It's your child and you can name him whatever you want.
  • Go for it, They are different names. My Aunt and Uncle almost named my cousin my name but they didn't at the last minute. The same exact name would be a little weird.

  • If you like it, use it! Finn is a cute name my sis wants to use it for her phantom baby.

  • I don't think they're similar enough for it to be a huge issue.  I do understand your concern, though.  A bunch of names I love are off our list because I think they sound too similar to family members' names.  For example  I like several names that would likely be shortened to Addie, but they're off the list because our neice's nickname is Abby.  I don't know whether anyone would be mad if we did choose one of those names, but it would just be too confusing.

  • Fiona and Finn are similar, in that they start with the same letter and both contain N sounds, but they're not the same name, they don't rhyme and they wont be easily confused. I don't think you have anything to worry about and should go ahead and use the name you want. Especially this late in your pregnancy, there is no need to go searching for a new name to avoid a minor similarity with a cousin.

Honestly, I had to read your post twice because I didn't understand what you were asking. I don't think of Fiona and Finn as even remotely the same name. Most people won't realize that they are both versions of the Gaelic name Fion, and I can't imagine that anyone would confuse the two. Has your family told you they will be upset, or are you just guessing they'll have a problem with it?

They haven't "told" me they would be upset but I feel that they will be after they figure out that the origin of the name is the same (which they will). But as all you ladies have said, the names sound different and won't be confusing at all so I think we may use the name after all (we are picking one of our top names after we see the baby). Thank you for your opinions, they really helped me relax about it :)

  • I'd definitely still use Finn!

  • i personally love the name finn and would totally use it, except for the part where our very good friends' dog's name is finn.  so i say go for it!  finn and fiona are so totally different anyway, and since it's hard enough to find a name you both like, i say don't sweat what family says!  (and if it makes things easier, don't tell anyone until after they've recorded the name on the birth certificate!)  : )

I'm glad you are feeling a little better about it now. I think Finn is a lovely name and it should definitely be on your list if you both like it. Smile

  • I agree with everyone. I wouldn't use them for sibling names, but cousins would be fine.
