Food at baby showers

I don't post as much over here as on Pregnant After a Loss, but you ladies always have good insight so I was hoping I could get some opinions :)

My mom, stepmom, and mother in law are throwing me a shower in early Sept and they are having a debate on foods. One just wants to make homemade sandwiches while the other two want to cater something (Chic-Fil-A, or a sandwich shop)

One feels that homemade foods is not that appropriate for guests that are bringing you gifts....however I have been to many baby showers where they make an awesome and pretty spread of homemade foods.

And another feels it will be too expensive to cater....so you can see how fun the planning is getting huh? LOL

 Too me, either is fine.

So my question is, what kind of foods do you serve at baby showers or have you seen served?

Re: Food at baby showers

  • We grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and had the fixings laid out.  Got potatoe salad and chips from costco. We also had some nuts and a mini candy buffet along with our cake, also from costco.
  • I think sometimes it depends on what type of food your going to serve.  If its sandwhiches it also depends on what type of sandwhiches your going to make.  Chicken salad sandwhiches take a lot of time and effort and sometimes its better to pay a little more and just cater.  I've thrown baby showers where we make the food for example sandwhiches and it was in the end too much work.  But for one of my baby showers my family bought brisket from H.E.B that you just throw in the oven to heat it up.  Its like $40 for A LOT and its already cut. OMG its awesome!! cause all you have to do is buy the buns, pickles, onions, bbq sauce and chips and drinks.  Heat it up and lay everything out so that everyone makes their own how they like it.  It was probably the best tasting, cheapest, convenient way to go.

  • I love showers where foods that the expectant mommy loves are served...maybe even cravings. Overall I like the homemade stuff over catered foods.

Ditto this. I usually do a combination of homemade and pre-made/catered. If it's something more time consuming (fajitas, bbq, etc.) I cater it but make my own sides. I did a sushi spread for one bride who loves sushi but had a few finger foods for those who didn't like too. I don't make my own sushi so that was mostly catered.

  • Do both!  People don't care where food comes from as long as it is good.  We have had a Chick-fil-A nugget tray at our 5 last parties, and they are always the first item to be gone.  Every.single.time.  In the end, people just appreciate being fed and not so much who made it.

  • Thank you everyone!!

I like the idea of doing both, that way it will appease both sides! I don't care either way, as long as there if food for me to eat ;)

  • Well done homemade food is nicer than inexpensive catered food in most cases, IMO. But if none of them are good cooks then catered is better Stick out tongue Personally I'd rather have homemade food than chik-fil-a (and I eat there all the time and like the food, I just don't think of it as "nice")

Another nice but easy homemade meal would be to serve a ham - just heat and serve and very yummy.

my question as well :) PAGAS I love the spread you did!! Was it an evening shower? Mine would be from 1-4. So I am thinking less food since it's after lunch?

  • Pretty much every shower I have hosted or ones for me the majority (if not all) of the food was homemade.  I think it is definitely the way to go!   And if your shower is at 1:00 I think most will probably snack a little before and come ready to eat.

i'm in charge of food for one (Definitely home made!) and it's from 2-4. Our menu will be much simpler and our budget isn't huge. Veg/fruit/cheese and a pasta salad, petit fours & cookies. Mom-to-be wants alcohol there even though she won't drink it.

whoa. we might have to do some re-planning. It's a tough group though. One originally didn't want to go in on a hostess gift because she was throwing the shower. She will also yell at me if I open up all of the plate packages because she won't be able to return the leftovers if I do that. (this is from experience)

This.  When I hosted DoraBride's shower, food was a little challenging since she was so sick her entire pregnancy.  In the end, we had a menu composed of things she loved/could eat, and it was tasty too:

    • Homemade pimento cheese sandwiches
    • Grilled chicken skewers
    • Fruit & veggie plates
    • Potato gallette
    • Pasta salad with tomatoes and fresh mozzarella
    • Cheese & crackers
    • Strawberry cake
    • Punch
There were probably some other things that I'm forgetting as well, but that was the bulk of it.

YUM! You can 'cater' any of my parties. ;-)

Another idea is that I have been to a few 'mid morning' showers where they had really nice 1/2 catered, 1/2 homemade brunchy things: gourmet bagels, juice bar, a breakfast meat or two, omelet tartlettes, fruit salad, etc... and it looked very nice as well as professional.

But bottom line, what do YOU want? :-)

  • Either is totally appropriate.  I tend to lean toward homemade because I have found it to be more budget friendly in most cases.

My baby shower was at 11am.  There were two different homemade quiches, fruit and cake.  Coffee, tea, etc. for drinks.

I co-hosted my SIL's bridal shower at 2pm.  We got premade chicken salad from Newk's (DELICIOUS) and bought croissants at the grocery store to make sandwiches.  Other items were prepared ourselves - spinach/artichoke dip, fruit tray (cut our own fruit), veggie tray (cut our own veggies), ranch dip...

I've also been to a 1pm bridal shower where a hot chicken casserole was served, along with fresh fruit and mini-croissants.
