Special Needs

HippoTherapy

Has anyone tried HippoTherapy for their kids? If so, did you see any improvement?  There is this place an hour from my home and they offer hippotherapy for children with special needs. My son is speech delayed and I've heard people say that kids start talking within weeks of therapy. I just want to know your thoughts on this?

Re: HippoTherapy

  • it's very effective!  Something about the human animal interaction that really motivates kids and draws them out.  I've done it for physical therapy.  It's great for all areas of development.  Check it out.   A good center with good therapy horses is worth it's weight in gold.  I actually visited a dolphin therapy place.  It combined the benefits of the animal with the benefits of water therapy.  VERY expensive, but effective!

  • everyone I've spoken with raves about it... I'm holding off for now (the wait lists at the places around here are quite long anyway), but I'm hoping to sign DD up in the next year or two...

  • how much does it cost?
  • I have a place near me that offers it and they take insurance (have no idea how that works).  I haven't tried it yet because DS#1 was pretty afraid of even getting close enough to pat a horse in the past, but am considering it for #2.
