Introducing Cereals And Solids??

When did you or do you plan to introduce solids to baby? My mom keeps telling me that because Collin is a big baby that he is gonna be ready for cereal soon. I keep disagreeing with her but I am now thinking that maybe he is almost ready. I am having a hard time pumping enough to send to daycare the next day so he is taking formula when the BM runs out. He is weighing in at 15lbs, 3oz and is 26in long. To me he seems bigger than Cooper was.

WWYD?

TIA

Re: Introducing Cereals And Solids??

  • You can start the basics anytime you feel comfortable after 6 months (at least that is what is recommended.)

G was always a big guy, he was that size at 3-4 months and he didn't really do solids until 15 months....yes you read that right. No rush, you won't starve your child, make them malnourished, or make them picky eaters.

    Mama to Z - 5.5 years, G - 3.5 years, & M - 1.5 years.

  • We introduced rice cereal at about 5.5 months. We were going to wait until 6 months to try any solids, but to me he just seemed ready a little bit beforehand. It wasn't based on weight or size, however. Just on how he seemed to be increasingly interested in what we were eating.

We waited until 6 months to try anything else, though. I like the way we did it; it gave him a few weeks to get the hang of the spoon, and to start working past the tongue thrust reflex.

The rice cereal was pretty easy to clean up compared to some of the other foods he's eating now, LOL!

  • We tried rice cereal at 6 months, and he was NOT interested! A couple of weeks later, we tried baby oatmeal and he loved it, and hasn't stopped eating since! LOL
  • We started cereal at 6 months because she seemed so ready and then moved onto other foodsa week later.  It didn't go over so well. I think her tummy wasn't quite ready.  She'd wake up crying during the night with gas.  I think I started her back up again at like 7 1/2 -8 months and it went much better that time.

  • EJ has always been an exceptionally large baby...even though he eats the normal average amount.  We tried solids when he was 4 months per the pediatrician, but he was so not having it, so we would try every 2 weeks to give him some and see if he would take it.  He finally got into solids just around 6 months.  He still doesn't eat too much in the way of solids, he has 2-3 meals a day of between .5 tbsp - 1.5 tbsp.

I don't think size plays into what infants eat or when they will be ready for the next step.  I think it just depends on when they baby themself is ready.

At 3 months EJ was 17lbs 25.5" long at 4 months he was 20lbs and 26.75" long.

  • We started cereal on Saturday after our 4 month appointment and the go ahead from the doctor on Friday. Zach is the same size approx as Cooper. DS was showing more interest when we were eating. We've only given cereal to him 2x in total. He seems to really like it so far...he hasn't had any adverse reactions to it from what we can tell. I don't think we will try anything else for a little while. Give him a little bit to get used to the cereal.
  • We started Ryan on solids at 4 mos...mainly because he was a horrible sleeper and I was convinced it was because he was so hungry.  I was so tired of getting up all night long (2 hours was the max he was sleeping).
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • I started at 4.5 months. I was going back to work ,and she wasn't doing too well with the bottle, so I wanted the sitter to have other options. She likes it, now we do primarily finger foods, she doesn't like purees anymore. She still drinks a lot of formula and for us, feeding at night doesn't make any difference in how she sleeps.

i agree that it is not based on how big the baby is. Never heard of that.

  • We have some potty issues, sometimes he won't go for 3-4 days and is miserable.

His Pedi suggested we try some veggies/fruit since he has been interested in our food for awhile now.

We tried carrots and he loved it, no tongue issues at all!

Plus for us is it's making him regular Smile

  • We started at 6 months w/DS#1 and plan to do the same with DS#2

  • We started plain rice cereal at 4.5 months (he'd already been having some in a bottle before bed for months- per his pedi, due to reflux). Then sweet potatoes at 5 months. I think whenever you feel comfortable introducing them is best (within reason of course). It's hard to not get caught in others' "they should be's or shouldn't be's".

  • We started rice cereal/oatmeal at 4-4.5 months per his pedi...and then other foods at five months...He is doing great with it and loves it.

It just depends on your baby.

One thing that our pedi told us that I thought was interesting and I was curious if anyone else got this information or advice....She said that there is less liklihood of food allergies if you start food earlier rather than later. We have a history of food allergies in my family so this is a concern of mine.
