Moms of babies with a G-tube

My good friend's baby has a g-tube due to a chromosomal abnormality. My question is ~ can you take your baby / child swimming with a G-tube? She was told by her doctors that she can take her baby in a pool, but she is afraid water will get in the G-tube (she also doesn't submerge her completely during baths). She doesn't know any other parents with children who have G-tubes...so I am asking on here.

Thanks ladies!

  • YES, YOU CERTAINLY CAN GO SWIMMING, AS LONG AS IT'S A CLEAN CHLORINATED POOL, NOT A LAKE OR RIVER.  WE TAKE OUR SON SWIMMING A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK. HE LOVES THE WATER. IF SHE IS WORRIED, SHE COULD ALWAYS PUT A WATERPROOF DRESSING OVER THE BUTTON, BUT IT IS NOT NECESSARY.

SORRY FOR THE CAPS LOCK-- MY KEYBOARD IS BROKEN!

Great, thank you! She is worried as she is concerned she wouldn't know if water got in or not!

  • The hole (ostomy) where the tube is should be snug around the tube. So nothing is going to get into that hole. When he goes into the pool. His pump and the tube connecting it won't be on, so the little flappy lid will close on top. But like PP said, I'd want to make sure it was sanitary water, just because the ostomy is still there and you don't want an infection to get around the site.

  • She can submerge his g-tube area in the bathtub as well!
  • Ditto the others. You can do whatever you want with regards to water.
  • DS swims and does whatever with his g-tube.
We were at my grandparents lakehouse this weekend and made sure to put dressing around it, but he did get in the lake and so far so good.
