Trouble TTC

Ladies taking Metformin

I am finishing my first month of Met.  I gradually stepped up to 1500 mg and have been there for about a week and half.

My question is this - does it make you feel bloated and full?  I haven't been able to eat much this week and constantly feel bloated/full.  After I eat, I feel super nauseated for hours.  For the most part, I'm staying away from white carbs and sugars.

Please tell me I'm not the only one.

The higher the dose, the more bloated and full I feel.  When I was on 1500 mg I had a hard time getting enough calories in me because I felt like crap all the time.  I am just starting back on it at 500 mg and so far, no s/e at all, just more energy which is great!

Were there any foods that you were able to tolerate without problems?

The plus side is I'm down about 5 pounds in the past 3 weeks.

  • I felt like that in the beginning, but now I don't unless I eat things I have a bad reaction to. I lost a ton of weight because of it early on, but as I tolerated it better, I gained the weight back :(

  • I definitely felt bloated during the first month, but since my energy level started to increase I took advantage and started exercising regularly after work every day.  I also started drinking more water to help with excess water retention.  Long story short, it took about 2 months or so for my body to get used to it but I've been fine since.  I also lost about 20 lbs over the last year (getting back to running gets a lot of credit, but the Met def helped to jump start my metabolism).  I hope it gets easier for you.  GL!
  • Just took my first one at lunch today so I can't help. I hope you feel better soon!

  • OK, I'm on it cuz I'm diabetic and I take 2000 mg a day, plus another med to lower my blood sugar more.  The Metformin made me nauseous and full and somewhat bloated for the first 2 weeks; after that, my body started to get used to it.  Now, with the additional med, I hardly eat anymore.  I still get nauseous from the Metformin, now more than before.  It is a normal side effect; it's supposed to help you curb your appetite.  My doc said that if it bothers me a lot, to lower my dosage for a week or to not take it for a week, and then go back to the normal dosage.  IDK if your doc would approve of that, but when I asked about TTC she said it shouldn't disrupt anything if I took a small break.  I haven't lowered or stopped my dosage, though.  As for staying away from carbs and sugars...even though I'm supposed to, I'm addicted to them.  =)

  • I think it may have at first, but after 2-3 weeks on the full dose I felt so much better than I did before taking it.  Except for the occasional bathroom emergencies, of course.  Good luck!

  • it gets better! I have been on it for 4 years now and I take 1000 in AM and another 1000 in PM. I don't have any symptoms except some extra curricular restroom activity once daily. LOL I never feel nauseated or bloated. And I still eat carbs. It will get better!
  • p.s. Make sure you take it WITH FOOD. I take my first dose with breakfast and my second with dinner. That defiintely helps!
