binkies ?

Does your LO use a binkie/pacifier? I was very hesitant to giving C a binkie because i didnt want him getting  hooked on it or nipple confusion ... but he has a major oral fixation and would want to nurse but would just lay with my nipple in his mouth. Is there any alternative or something wrong with giving him a binkie? My boobs just cant take the constant nursing!

Re: binkies ?

  • Kash also used me as a human pacifier.  He wouldn't take one so I had no choice.  I know moms who have given their child one from day 1 and never had nipple confusion but I also know moms who started them on a paci early and weren't successful at nursing.  Was that the reason, I don't know.

I guess it could go either way depending on your kid.  I have always heard the 6 week rule.  Don't intorduce any other nipples for 6 weeks.  But then again, by that time your kid probably won't take one.

Wow...I really was no help! Stick out tongue

  • I waited until Caroline was about 3 weeks old. Now she only uses it when she's sleeping.  It "lives" in her crib with her froggy lovey.  She knows to throw them both in there when I pick her up out of the crib after naps and in the morning.
  • we have used one as a last resort a couple times and although he occassionally doesnt latch right away the first feeding after, we haven't noticed a huge problem.

We do this too. Austin is only allowed to have it during naps and at night when he goes to bed. When I go in there to get him, he automatically takes it out of his mouth and throws it down. Half the time he doesn't even use it.

  • i would totally be ok with that. i just dont want him needing it all day long. thanks ladies!
  • Kellen took a binky when he was 2 days old.  The nurse suggested it at the hospital b/c he was a comfort nurser.  I wasn't planning on giving him one so soon, but my nips couldn't take it anymore, so I agreed!  LOL!  He had no issues with nipple confusion at all.  The hospital gave him the Nuk brand and when we got home, we tried one of the Avents.  He definitely preferred them and they look more like a nipple to me anyways.  He will use it when he is tired or when he is hungry and I can't feed him immediately.  I am definitely going to monitor his use of it though---I don't want him to be totally addicted 24/7!

This sounds exactly like us. The nurse gave him one when we were in the hospital because all he wanted to do was nurse on me and that was the only way he fell asleep. It seems to help calm him down when he is overly tired and won't go to sleep on his own, but I'm trying to use it as a last resort. We will see what happens as he gets older.

  • G has taken a pacifier since day 1 and we have never had an issue with nipple confusion...We use the Nuk ones!
  • We've used a paci since he was born with no issues, but he doesn't really like it.  I think he's going to be a thumb sucker -- he sucks on his fist for comfort.
  • B liked sucking on a paci but she couldn't keep it in her mouth on her own until she was about 2 months old.  The only one she likes is Nuk.  She is a total boob woman - no nipple confusion here.  If it saves your nips, I say go for it.  You can worry about getting it away from him later Smile
