I really, really appreciate all the encouraging responses to my posts about spotting. It's reassuring to know so many people have experienced it and gone on to have successful pregnancies.
But I also want to know about the other end of the spectrum. If you've had a m/c (esp. an early one), did it start out with spotting? At what point did it turn to bleeding, and how long did the whole process take? When/how did you know for sure that you were miscarrying?
Just trying to prepare myself. *SIGH*
Re: If you've had a m/c
I've had two known m/c. One was a 2nd tri one...totally different and not related to chromosomes. It started out with brown spotting and consistent contx.
My early m/c was at 5wks2d or 5wks, but I knew it was coming as my betas didn't double (or increase 67% per my RE) My first one was 360 something at 4wks and the 2nd one was 400 something. I think. On the 3rd beta, it went down so I was told m/c was imminent. I had some brown spotting on this one, but I had it around 4wks with all my pregnancies.
I really hope this isn't the case for you, but here's my info.
I've had 3 m/c. All at or around 6 weeks. I would spot for maybe half a day and then have cramping and full-blown red bleeding with clots, just like a period for 5 or 6 days. I think if I didn't know I was pg, I would have thought I was just having my period a few weeks late.
FWIW-all 3 times, my cycles returned to normal 4 weeks post m/c and I was able to conceive again within a few months.
*ETA* I only had betas with my 3rd m/c. They doubled the first time, but were super low. I did betas with my 2nd daughter (5th pg) and my first beta with her was over 700. With the m/c, I never got above 150, even at 6 weeks.
With my first miscarriage I noticed pink CM on my progesterone suppository applicator the morning of my second beta (my betas were super late - I think this one was something like 20dp5dt - so 25dpo). My beta came back a few points lower than my first beta so we knew things weren't good. I started the natural miscarriage process (bleeding and passing tissue) about 4-5 days later.
When we lost the twins with this pregnancy, I had minor spotting on Saturday - call my Peri and was told to just lay low until Monday when she could see me. When I had an ultrasound that Monday, we could no longer detect heartbeats - I was right at 9 weeks and did not experience bright red blood nor did I have any cramping.
I'm hoping that you are fine and don't have to experience a loss.
I found out I had a blighted ovum around 6.5 weeks. My betas were fine and had doubled normally. I went in for my first u/s at 6.5 weeks and they only saw a small sac. Because it was an unmedicated cycle, they gave me the schpeal that maybe it was just too early, blah blah blah. About an hour after that u/s, I started spotting pink. It continued for a few days, getting progressively worse, until I m/c on my own about 48-72 hours after that u/s.
Mine was not like a heavy period though, it was much worse than that and I actually felt like I had contractions as I passed the sac (albeit minor ones). But it was way more painful than any period I had before.
I will keep you in my thoughts. I even had a tiny bit of spotting with my successful pg (like less than 4 hours worth), so I know how scary it can be.
FET #1 = BFP on 5/2011
really??? I mean REALLY?
Most of mine were ending as they were starting. Old eggs, crap eggs, bad sperm, funky immune disease, endo... who the feck knows.
Before we figured out that I HAVE to be on major p4 support, I would be spotting most of the LP and just heavier spotting once I was pregnant.
Once I was on p4 support, I had very little spotting or none, and my only signs that the pregnancy was not continuing was usually "OMG I have to chit" cramps (you know the ones, diff than early-preg cramps) and then eventually spotting.
I know everyone says spotting can be normal, and I believe them. But for me, it usually meant something. But you have to keep in mind I've lost 8 pregnancies, and all but 2 were that 1st week. But sometimes it was brown, then whoa! red, then brown again.... you could never look at my track record and say "oh chit, that's what's happening to me, too!" That's not fair to yourself. (Ironically, I NEVER spotted with Harvey, the one I lost at almost 11weeks. But I thought I was in labor the cramps were so bad. It wasn't until after the D&C did I see red. So odd. )
I say hop in for a beta today and in 48 hours. can't hurt. could help ease your mind or confirm your worse suspicions.
Obviously I'm going to hold out hope for you, but I get not wanting the puppies and rainbow crap for a second and just hearing "yes, this could be a bad sign" too.
But you can only deal with the FACTS at this point. Get the betas.
Missed miscarriage, never had spotting. Nothing.
Now, with this last pregnancy, I had spotting at 7 weeks, was sure the pregnancy was over, went and got a u/s and the baby was fine.
I'm hoping you get the same news. Hoping for the best, sea.

I get that. With this last CR IVF 5 minute pregnancy, I KNEW someone (or several) were going to try to talk me into thinking my stinkyarse betas were actually possibly good. lol. or valid. That's part of the reason I had to take off on sabatical. Well, that and I went BSC. ;-)
I'll be thinking of you. I know how hard this is, hon.

I'm sorry you have to even think about this and I hope it turns out okay.
I had a m/c at six weeks. I knew it was coming because my second beta did not increase at all. I don't remember spotting for long -- maybe an hour -- before it turned to very heavy bleeding with clots. It happened while I was at work and I had to rush out to the drugstore to get heavier pads and some extra-strength Motrin. The cramps were awful. I feel like it was far worse than a normal period.

When I had my c/p at around 5wks I had brown spotting that turned into a period that same day before they even got my beta back. BUT w/ that PG my beta's were very, very, very low.
I know you don't want to hear that it can be normal (or at least I didn't) BUT it really can be!!!!!!
I wish I could help with my M/C I never bled, medication or a D&C was necessary to get things started.
I hope and pray that this is nothing more than early pregnancy spotting.
I'm sad to see this post and hoping you don't lose your baby. I didn't respond to your previous posts because I find it difficult to be in a everything will work out mood lately.
My first miscarriage began with bright red bleeding at 12 weeks but I didn't lose the baby until 14 weeks. With my second miscarriage, at 10 weeks, (baby measured 7wk4d) I did have some slight spotting from around 7-8 weeks but not very much.
On a more positive note, I did have brown and then pink spotting around 7-8 weeks with my daughter and that pregnancy turned out fine.
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
This Cluttered Life
I've had 2 late first tri m/c's. Both stopped developing right at 12 weeks and were discovered shorty after with u/s. No spotting and no cramping with either. Never had a clue. Had d&c's with both.
I really hope that isn't what's happening with you.
((Hugs))

Davez got me thinking.....maybe a progesterone test is in order? Just to play it safe?
Hm, maybe...

I had several early miscarriages. Sometimes it started out as spotting, but very quickly got heavier (over the course of a few hours it went from spotting to full on bleeding). But it was ALWAYS accompanied by severe cramping. These times I knew that I was miscarrying before the doctor could even verify it. The whole process took about 5-7 days. It was just so obvious by the amount of pain and blood. The one that I lost just before 6w in December started as mild cramping throughout the day that then went away and then a couple of hours a huge gush of blood that eventually tapered off. I went in for an u/s the next morning that confirmed it was a miscarriage. I really hope that everything works out and that this is just normal pregnancy spotting. (((hugs))
ETA: Sorry- don't know why it posted twice.
I had spotting around 8w, went in for an ultrasound and they said the baby was measuring behind, but since it wasn't a treatment cycle my dates could be off and come back in a week. Nothing else, went back in the week and there was more bleeding inside the uterus and no change in the size of the baby/sac. It was another three weeks before I bled properly, but it was over quite quickly (the worst lasted about 24 hours total).
I didn't see your other post yet, but I also had spotting on and off through the whole first tri with DD and again at 29 weeks, so don't give up yet!
With my m/c, I had no spotting at all. My betas started really high, then went down a little, then a little more, then finally went to 0 after a week +. After that, I stopped PIO, and AF was there within a day or 2.
((hugs)) I hope everything is okay, and the spotting is nothing. Praying for you and your little bean!
I've had two missed miscarriages. (info in my siggy)
I didn't bleed for either of them. We just found out when we went for an u/s.
I really think you're fine hon
Hang in there!
Unexplained Infertility
After two Clomid cycles, three injectable IUI cycles, two IVFs, two miscarriages, and one lap surgery, IVF #2 has brought us our little boy!
TTC #2
After months of being postponed or cancelled, FET #1.3 (Natural FET) brought us twin girls!
I had a m/c at 5 weeks. It was before we were working with an RE.
I spotted one time, bright red, about 2-3 days beforehand, then m/c naturally. I knew I was m/c almost immediately -- it happened pretty fast, I started bleeding (with clots) late on a Friday night and by Monday afternoon when I got to the doctor it was down to just light spotting and my levels were negative. I had cramping, and they felt like contractions. It was completely different from period cramps and the cramps I had when bleeding from my SCH.
I'm so sorry you are dealing with this! I had 2 m/c, both really early. The first I as on supps and had crazy low betas and started bleeding like a normal period as soon as I stopped the supps.
The second time I had spotting the same day I tested, at about 20DPO. But I was so excited to be pg I didn't care. THe advice nurse insisted I go to the ER though before she'd book me to see my OB.
Which of course was a waste of 5 hours and $50 since I wasn't even 5w yet. My first beta was just under 200 and the second had barely gone up. By that time I was spotting and cramping and knew it wouldn't last.
Here's the thing though. That damn pregnancy held on, spotting all the while, for WEEKS. My beta dropped to 75, then 50 and we assumed I was going to have a natural m/c but the bleeding never began. When we checked again, it had gone up the mofo. Back to 75. And then back to 50. Repeat repeat repeat. I either needed a d&C (which my OB could only do without putting me to sleep which I was totally against) or take methotrexate. I got the shots when I would have been 9 weeks or so.
I still didn't bleed properly. I spotted off and on for another MONTH. And then it magically stopped. And three weeks later I realized I was pg again.
And that pregnancy turned out to be my son. Conceived when I thought I was still m/c.
My betas then were incredible (+600 at 17 DPO or so I think) and I spotted off and on through the entire first tri and then again in the third.
So it could be bad, and really long and drawn out, or it could end with a live baby. No fecking way to tell as Davez would say.
