Vacationing too late?

So I decided I want to go away for one last little weekend before the babies come, as a treat for my husband and I before the "craziness" ensues. lol. It turns out the only weekend we can get away will be in my 23 rd week and it's about an hour drive away.  Have any of you vacationed this late in the game/ and or do you not recommend it?? I wanted to go earlier but the place we are going is all booked. Any opinions?  :)  Don't know if at at that time I'll be too uncomfortable or not.....

Re: Vacationing too late?

  • I was still good at 23 weeks and only being an hour away is perfect.  We waited until 26 weeks and I ended up not being able to go because of contractions.

  • Unless there's an unexpected complications, you should be fine.  I went to the UK at 20w and had a great time. I felt good until closer to 28-30 weeks, and that's when I hit the wall. You should still be feeling good at 23w.

Just make sure you have a copy of your medical files and know where the nearest hospital with a high level NICU is in case of emergency.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah my baby shower is in my 26th week so I am worried about that!

Good idea!!!! I will make sure to bring that with me.... Thanks!!

  • you should be fine...like most ladies on here I found I hit a big wall at 28 weeks...but before then I felt pretty great....enjoy!
  • I started to get uncomfortable around 25w (2nd pg, so I was chasing a toddler at the same time), but I don't think 1 hour is far at all.  We live about an hour away from everything anyway.
  • We did an 8-hr drive each way to Orlando when I was 22.5-23.5 weeks pregnant! My ILs had invited us along on their Disney vacation and we'd agreed to it before i got pregnant. My OB approved so we went through with it. I was definitely uncomfortable but not enough to ruin the trip or anything. I got a back support pillow for the car, stopped every hour to walk for 5-10 mins (not an issue for you! :)) and we rented a wheelchair for the long days at the theme parks. (There was no way I could've stood in lines for half an hour and walked all over the place all day at that stage of the game! I got dizzy if I stood in place for more than 2-3 minutes.) We definitely went at a more relaxed pace than BIL and his kids but if you guys are just vacationing on your own and can set your own pace, no problem, especially since you're that close. Obviously you might develop complications that would lead to canceling the trip. I would talk it over with your OB before paying a deposit or anything just to be safe.

Thanks so much for your input! Yeah we already have in mind that we know we won't be doing a lot of walking, sightseeing, etc... just relaxing a lot at the hotel I think. And great idea-I definitely will mention to my doctor about going away at that time. I was planning on asking her about that.

  • Sounds perfect!

And yeah, my OB did just tell me to take a copy of my medical records and the advice about stopping every hour, not walking too much, etc., but that shouldn't be an issue for you. (I never had any complications, good cervical length, and had di/di twins so I wasn't at especially high risk for a twin pregnancy.)

  • An hour away should be fine - I'm an hour away from my hospital!  I was still commuting 1.5 hour each way at week 23 on trains...

  • We were still traveling to my parents and in-laws for visits up to the poing of me being 32 weeks and they both live about 2 1/2 hours away from us.  I guess it depends on how high risk you are considered.  Now at 35 weeks there is no way I am going far away!
