KoriBrett

I just saw your  swimming lessons post and wanted to suggest you call and speak to the coach and let him/her know what's going on or any underlying issues you think DD may have. You'd be surprised at the coach's willingness to make accommodations.

Jayden's started swimming lessons last Monday and he LOVES the water so we expected it to be so easy for him. Well Monday we arrived and there were like 6 kids in the pool and a swim meet directly beside the pool where they were doing the lessons. Jayden cried for me the entire time, and when he wasn't crying for me he was not listening to the instructor and trying to climb out of the pool. I could tell that he was just way too distracted by everything else going on around him so he couldn't focus on his instructor. After his second class, I decided to pull him out and I called the coach and told her my concerns. She offered to give him an extra class each week and she changed the times of some of the other lessons so there wouldn't be as many kids in the pool with him. We took him in the same night she made the changes and guess what?? Jayden learned to swim that night! He still has more lessons this week and next but he's swimming and enjoying the lessons now. It's all about knowing your child and making things easier for them, so it won't hurt to call the coach and see what s/he suggests.

Re: KoriBrett

  • Hey lady :-)

We're going to (weather permitting) try swimming with her this weekend, and then go to the next class and see how it goes.  She has to be super over prepared for everything or she flips, so I'm HOPING that maybe now that she knows more what to expect she'll be a bit better.

There is a class on a diff. night for younger kids but it's more about getting familiar w/the water, etc, than about being mobile.  Depending on how things go on Monday we'll talk to the instructor about just shifting her down a level.  The instructor already had to do more 1-1 with her than the other kids just at the first class so we'll see.  Thanks for the idea (and GO JAYDEN !).
