A little backstory.
We've been planning a working lunch with a certain client for months now. And just when we had a date picked (1 week before my maternity leave) the client needs surgery so it was once again indefinitely postponed.
So halfway through my maternity leave (I think Sam was about 2 weeks old!) I get an e-mail from my boss, asking me if I would mind coming to the working lunch during my ML. At first the option was the first week of July...but I said that was just to soon after having my c-section/giving birth.
So the new option was mid-August (the 17th), just 1 day shy of the end of my ML (I've added 2 weeks of vacation, so I won't be returning to the office until September 1st. So I said I would come.
I then e-mail the HR-woman about my return to work, and asking her to add a vacation day for the working lunch I have during my ML. (okay, my bad not to consult my boss, but still). This was over a week ago....
I now get an e-mail from HR, that she discussed things with my boss, and that apparently the working lunch is just "a social get together" and I won't be getting any vacationtime for it.
However, I can guarantee you my boss & co-workers won't be deducting any of their vacation time to go to this lunch. Since they are working that day, they will just credit it to being work. Maybe its just me, but I find this completely unfair! How can it be work for the one person and "personal" for the other.....
For every one who made it this far, here's some apple/cinnamon cake!
Re: NBR - I'm furious at my boss! (sorry kinda long)
I can understand you being upset. Maybe talk with him and explain you figured that you would be able to be compensated for the time off.
But a working lunch is an hour. Think of it maybe as a chance to impress your boss that you are able to still be apart of something even when you are gone.
I am on mat leave for ten months, and I still go in to work to see the owner so that I can keep up on things at least once a month. It shows him I am dedicated, but keeps me in the loop with what is going on. I am not being paid for it, which doesn't bother me. I have only been gone 10 days, and have already spent about 3 hours at work, which is not a big deal to me. I see it as part of my job.
I am sorry that you have to deal with this sillyness!
It just irks me how some bosses manipulate things to fit their needs.
I send you a virtual Mojito to deal with this.

@CanadianBride: I think I am being loyal for going to the lunch in my ML. However, the lunch will probably 2 hrs, since there will also be a presentation of the computer program. Also, it takes about 1hr to get there and another hour to get back, so all in all the whole lunch takes up almost half my day, which is a lot. And I know I probably shouldn't "count" the transport time, but my co-workers drive there in their work-time and don't have to compensate that time either, so why should I?
@Fanny: thanks for the Mojito, yumm!!
I would tell him you don't mind going, but want to be compensated, even if that means you are able to come in an hour later or go home an hour earlier when you go back to make up for it. Or could they maybe schedule it when you are back for sure. It seems like it has been set back before, so what is an extra couple weeks.
