Absolutely, but I can't believe how expensive it is! I would hate for money to keep me from giving my family the best medical care, but if I can't afford it, I can't afford it.
I didn't know that public banking was an option- at least I could be helping SOMEONE!
I want to do it! Just cannot afford it. I agree with PP I hate to not do something that is good for my baby due to money. But when you 100% can't afford it you can't.
We will be cord blood banking. I agree...it is expensive but some of our family member have actually benefited and had to cash in on it and we feel it is something we should do too. Talk to you OBGYN...we did and it helped since we already had incidence in our extended family.
i would highly recommend a lot of research before commiting to private banking. there is a lot of misinformation out there and imo, some of it is based on scare tactics (very easy to tug on heartstrings of moms when it comes to their kids). just be sure you're research comes from unbiased groups. i was pretty surprised when i started looking into it.
We're definitely looking into it. The second time my father had brain cancer they did a stem cell transplant using his own and he's been in remission ever since. But I also know that using your own isn't always an option, so we just need to do a lot more research.
We did it with DD and we're debating about doing it again. Regardless of cost NOW, think down the road if your child is sick, what would you pay to be able to fix them?? That in my mind is worth anything. We paid $1600 for ours through CBR. We did 6 months interest free broken into 6 equal payments of $275. It is $125 a year for storage.
The lady we worked with was Naomi and she was awesome in helping us. No one was ever pushy to us.
If anyone is interested in using me as a referral through them, let me know, I'll give you Naomi's direct info. (Just to give full disclosure anyone I "refer" gives me 1 year free storage)
We did it last time and we'll do it again this time.
It was very easy, almost too easy - our doctor's office had the kits already (the company told us this), we just requested one. It is so common now that nobody batted an eye. It seemed pretty routine to everyone. The best part was the courier dude who came to the room to collect the kit. Talk about making it easy.
I considered it, but my hospital wasn't on the public list for our state. Then I asked my doc if she recommended it, and she was pretty adamant that in most cases (i.e. no family history of leukemia etc.) the cost outweights the benefit. She said she turned it down with each of her kids, even when they were offering it to her for free (so she would in turn recommend it, and she was really uncomfortable with that).
We are on the fence. If nothing else we will donate it. But we really want to save it (I feel selfish saying that), but it will cost us $1850 for 10 years which really isn't that much but I'll have to talk to my dr first.
Re: Cord Blood Banking - anyone thinking of doing this?
This...it's crazy pricey to do.

we donate to our hospital's bank.

I think having disability insurance and a will/POA/trust is where I'm putting my money.
Definitely ask your doc...
