Help with blackout shades

LO's nursery is a mess.  When we moved I picked out the wrong color for his room, so the walls are DARK green, he has PBKids circus-tent looking blackout drapes (from a previous Ebay fail) and Cottontail toile bedding.  It looks like a zoo in there-literally.  I need to order some curtain rods and prefer to have a double rod where you can hang a blackout panel behind and a valence in front.  I priced the materials out on PBKids and it came out to $316!!!  Um, no.  So does anyone know of a cheaper site with cute blackout shades, valences, etc??  I might need to re-do his whole room.  I just can't stand the mis-match anymore!  TIA!

Re: Help with blackout shades

  • The shades we have are not cute, but they are functional, hidden when not in use, and temporary. We have nice blinds and just wanted something we could put behind those until DS gets a bit older (and we didn't want something that we had to screw into the wall or window frame since we don't plan on using them long term).

We ordered these off of Amazon. You cut them to width and they had an adhesive strip to attach to the window frame. Plus they only cost $40 which provided enough to cover a large window in DS' room and two large windows in DD's room.

  • We have blackout shades from JC Penny. They are inexpensive and effective, but not very cute. We have them behind curtains (from Ikea on rods from a local Target-like store). I planned on sewing valances, which haven't been finished yet... so we have towels over the top to block the light... It was all quite cheap and looks nice. I was lucky that Ikea had curtains that went perfectly with DD's wall color.

You can also buy black-out material to back curtains with, if you wanted to keep your current ones (or to use on new ones).

  • Thanks for the advice, ladies!
  • I got these for DD;s room from Walmart, 25.00!! They work so good and I just attached them to the back of her curtain. She is sleeping so much better now. They work so great, we got them for our room and the guest room. You can pick longer lengths for the bigger windows too.

We also have the JCP ones.  They do the job & are just plain white, but we have drapes in front of them.

  • I just went through this. We have a valence and I just bought cordless blackout blinds from lowes. They were $60 each and so far they work great. I'm kinda glad we didn't get blackout curtains.
