Classes to ask my nanny to take?

We're thinking way ahead with this one but there is a woman who works for DH's family who we are considering asking to work as our nanny when the baby arrives.  We are pretty sure she wants the job (she's mentioned it before I was even pregnant).  Of course we'll talk about hours and pay, but I'm also wondering if I should ask her to take some classes or get some certifications.  I was thinking infant CPR, for one.  Any other suggestions?  She lives in Fairfax, and if anybody knows of a class in Spanish that would be much easier for her I'm sure.

She is a mother herself (and grandmother) and worked as a nanny many years ago, so I'm confident that she knows what to do with a baby in general!  Thanks!

  • The only thing that comes to my mind is infant/child CPR and First Aid. Call the Red Cross and see if they have some in Spanish. I would be surprised if there are none in this area!

  • If though she is was a nanny  years ago and is a grandmother, be sure she is up on all the current safety stuff (like sleeping on their backs, chocking hazards, etc.).  I think Inova offers a grandparent refresher course with this kind of thing.  Also, Parenting Playgroups is starting to offer weekend classes for nannies and babysitters on positive discipline that you may want to look into.
