Allergy meds and IVF

I have chronic hives due to allergies.  I am allergic to my cats, I just found out last year when I started to get hives.  To control the hives I take two Claritin every morning.

When I had my IVF injection class with the IVF coordinator she said that I can't take the Claritin during my IVF cycle.  She said if my hives get really bad I can take Benedryl instead.  Why would Benedryl be safe and Claritin not?  They are both antihistimines and both are safe during pregnancy.  I will follow her orders of course but here is my question.  I will start stims on Thursday (hopefully).  Do you think it is safe to take Claritin up until then or should I stop taking it now?  Benedryl make so sleepy so I will have to take that before bed.

    I haven't had to do IVF yet, so I am not sure why Claritin is a problem. I also have bad allergies and take Zyrtec and Singulair. I was told to stop Singulair, but given the ok to keep taking Zyrtec while we are TTC. I would call the RE office to clarify on when to stop taking the Claritin. If you are anything like me it will only take a few days of not taking meds to start having issues severe allergic reactions. GL

    I take Zyrtec and occassionally benedryl my RE is fine with me continuing these during IVF. I don't know why you were told not to take Claritin.  But, I have never asked about it specifically.

    ~SAIF/PAIF/Everyone Welcome~ 

    Me= 37 and DH = 41 

    Dx: DOR, Endo, APA+ (really high beta 2 glycoprotein antibody and high everything else tested), heterozygous MTHFR mutation, positive for lupus anticoagulant, high FSH, low AMH and both tubes blocked (per HSG on 3/8/11)

    IVF #1 - long lupron (with HGH, intralipids, lovenox and BA); 4 retrieved, 3 fertilized; ET 2 blasts and 1 frozen = BFN

    IVF #2 - a version of antagonist with EPP (with HGH, intralipids, lovenox and BA); 6 retrieved, 4 mature, 3 fertilized, 2 blasts and 1 frozen blast transferred on day 5 = BFN.

    IVF #3 April was postponed to May, May was canceled. June/July was canceled. Had a cyst aspiration and then began IVF #3 in August. ER on 8/22; ET on 8/24 with AH. +HPT on 9/5. Beta #1 (11dpo) = 3; Beta #2 (15dpo) = 29; Beta #3 (17dpo) = 60; Beta #4 (19 dpo) = 118. Heartbeat at 6 weeks 6 days =132.  Lil is here!

    TTC#2:  Trigger + TI = BFN; Clomid + Trigger + IUI = BFN.

    IVF #4:  BCP + MDLF + Lovenox = 7R, 1F = Transferred 1 6-cell embryo on day 3 = BFN

    IVF #5:  MDLF + Lovenox = 4R, 1F = Transferred 1 10-cell compacting embryo on day 3 = BFN

    IVF #6:  (New RE):  Long Antagonist November 2014 (transferred two 8 cell grade 1 embryos and froze one blast) = BFN

    FET#1:  BFN

    I was just looking through all the IVF paperwork they gave and it specifically says do not take Claritin.  It is so strange.  There is no mention of Zyrtec and they list Benedryl as being OK.  Maybe there is some extra ingredient in Claritin that they don't want me to have.  I will ask about it at my appt. Thursday.  Hopefully I can take Zyrtec instead.

    I hope you are allowed to take Zyrtec and that it works for you.  I usually by the Wal-Zyr generic Walgreens kind these days.  It is a lot cheaper and works just as well for me!
