March 2011 Moms

scary thing happened to me this weekend

We went to the zoo on Saturday and I guess we didnt realize how hot it was out.

I just felt so hot, I couldnt get my heart to slow down.  So we went to the concession stand to order drinks.  I got so hot, dizzy and literally felt like I was going to throw up.  I told DH to order me a slurpee and went into the bathroom splashed water on my face, went to the toilet and threw up, washed my face again.  This time I felt dizzy and my legs were numb.  I was seeing stars.  I was afraid I was going to pass out and DH wasnt going to know where to look for me and his mom was with us who doesnt know I am pg yet.  So I started to walk towards to food court again and I just saw stars... I have no idea how I got there.  I sat down and drank the slurpee and had a terrible headache.  After we rested and ate some snacks, we went to the train.  As we were waiting on line I felt sick again, had to sit down and told them to go ahead without me.  Went to the bathroom and threw up again.  I tried to keep it under warps as much as I could...because my MIL was with us and she doesnt know yet. I just told her the heat was getting to me.  When we came home I had diarreah all night... nonstop...

The scary thing is I AM NEVER EVER hot.  I have this strange body temp that never ever gets hot BUT yesterday I could barely breathe or calm my heart rate down. It was like jumping through my chest.

It was super scary..............

I have a very minor heart condition that used to cause these exact same symptoms and I used to pass out.  My heart condition is that my heart rate increases when I am in a standing position, so whenever there are other stressors (like extreme heat), the symptoms kick in.  I read that during pregnancy, heart rate increases too so that may be what was going on in your case.

Whenever I feel that way, I just need to immediately sit down and hydrate.  If I keep standing, the stars continue to get worse until all I see is yellow and next thing I know, I'm on the ground.  I know exactly how you feel, and I am sorry you had to go through it.  It is a VERY scary feeling.  If it happens again, sit down as quickly as possibly and drink lots of water.  Hope that helps and hopefully this was a one time thing for you!

  • raeg13,  I also have this. It is called vaso vagal syncope. I pretty much know what to do when I feel like I am going to pass out, but now that I am pregnant I'm scared it will act up more often...

Mine is different, it's called POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), but I was diagnosed at a syncope clinic.  I haven't passed out since my late teens, early twenties and like you said, I know what to do now when it does start to happen.  I am also a bit nervous about it acting up more during the pregnancy.  I notice the times I get it now the worst are when I am sick because my body is weak and it's hard to do anything.  I am hoping it won't get too bad during the pregnancy.  Keep me updated on how everything goes with you!

  • Scary! When I was pregnant with my first, I had a similar experience during a yoga class and had to stumble out before I passed out in the class.  It's common to get dizzy and pass out during pregnancy...you'll just have to take it easy I guess!
  • ladies, water, water, water! In pregnancy the recommendation is 5.oz of water per lb of body weight, per 24 hour period. Flavored water, soda, juices, etc don't count.

We need so much more water in our day while were pregnant, not to mention how much more sensitive our skin becomes to the sun. Sun burns are easier. Heat exhaustion is easier.

Please take care of yourself on hot days! Find shade, seek out air conditioning, drink water, wear cool, lightweight clothing.
