Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

if you had a 5-6 lb'er with no or little nicu time - clothing question

A friend of mine just had her baby boy at 36 weeks.  He's 5 lbs 6oz and 18 in.  From what I've seen on FB everyone is doing well and he's not in NICU.  I ran out to get her clothes thinking she would probably need small stuff, but now I am second guessing myself.  I know that most people got me larger size clothing and even though DS was just under 8 lbs I needed to go out and get NB things and he was in that size for a month.

- Did you need preemie size for you 5-6 lber?
       - If yes how long were they in it for?

- How long was your DC is NB?

- Did most people get you NB clothes (either at your shower or when DC was born) or did you need to go out and get some because everyone gave you larger clothing?

Re: if you had a 5-6 lb'er with no or little nicu time - clothing question

  • My oldest daughter was 5lbs 5 oz when she was born and came home at 2 weeks at 4lbs 13oz.  She was in preemie for a long time, over a month.  I can't remember for sure but I think she was in NB until around 2 months then she started gaining pretty quickly.

My youngest was born at 6.9 pounds and was in NB for almost 2 months but she was also able to fit a lot of 0-3 after a month.  Since it was summer the NB stuff fit longer since it was dresses, same reason the 0-3 fit since they could be a little big and be ok.  She is still a little peanut and has never gained quickly though.

  • My kids were 5lb7 and 5lb8 with no NICU time.  They wore only preemie stuff for about 3 weeks, and weren't completely out of preemie sizes until 5-6 weeks.  Newborn clothes were HUGE on them at first.  They weren't out of nb clothes until almost 3 months.
  • My son was born at 35 weeks and was 6lbs 1oz he was in preemie size for close to month he dropped down to 5lbs 10oz and took his time gaining it back. He was in newborn till he was 3 months old. And up till he was maybe 9 months he was always a size behind meaning at 4 months in 0-3months and 7 months in 3-6 months.

  • That was the exact same size as my full term DD. She only fit preemie for a week due to length. Newborn onesies/sleepers were huge, but she grew into them fairly quickly. I didn't really have outfits for her at that point.

ohh that's good to know.  I was just looking at the sizes again and it looks like he'd be too long for preemie since he's 18 inches.

  • My DD was 5 lbs 2 oz, born at 38 weeks.  She was 18 1/2 inches long.  I had purchased some preemie clothing but she was just too long for the onesies or sleepers in that size.  Of course the newborn were just too big overall because she was so skinny and still is a skinny girl.

DD was in newborn clothes until she was 4 months old.  I had to purchase the newborn clothes for her (my mom and MIL did also).  For the shower, everyone gave us 3-6 month summery clothes which she never really wore because by that time, it was winter here and too cool for that.

My kids were 19 inches at birth and they still fit in preemie clothes.  Some of the lengths listed on those sizes are off a bit.  They did outgrow them by length instead of weight though.

  • DD was born at 36 weeks. 5 pounds 5 ounces and 18.25 inches.

She was in preemie for over a month but we also struggled with weight in the beginning. She was in newborn for the following 2 months. We didn't have one preemie item so my Mother and Mother in Law went out and bought us some while we were in hospital. We had like 7 items we interchanged for those first 4-5 weeks.

Oh for got to add: The only time she spent in the NICU was while we were still in the hospital so like 3 days. Doc's thought after my 28 week scare she may come early so they gave me a steroid shot in order to help her lungs progress. It worked!

  • Both of my full term kids were 5lbs 9oz and 5lb 12 oz. 21.5 inches and 20 inches.  DS wore premie for about 3 weeks and DD wore premie for at least 3 weeks if not more.  The length is only a suggestion and didn't seem to matter for things like onesies or one pieces without "feet".   The nb stuff was just too huge for those first few weeks!  Ii'll bet you could find some awesome premie stuff for summer on clearance right now.

DD was that exact length and weight when she was born at 38.5 wks.  She was in preemie sizes for a week or two, but it wasn't really necessary.  She was in nb size for 2-3 months.  I got tons of clothes in all sizes.

  • DS was 6lbs 19in.

    we never used preemie's cloths.

and DS was in NB for about a month-month and a half.

I had almost NO NB cloths. everyone bought me 0-3m+ for my babyshower. I had DH run out to walmart or target to get a couple sleepers and onsies to bring home because DS was SWIMMING in 0-3 motnhs.

  • Thanks everyone.  I ended up sticking with the NB footed pj's I originally had bought.  I spoke to a mutual friend and everything she got at her shower was for 3mo+.

  • LO was 5lbs 12 oz, 19 inches and left the hospital (no NICU) at 5lbs 7 oz.  He didn't need preemie clothes, we used NB for about a month-3 months.  They were a tad big at first but he grew into them pretty fast.  And then he grew into the rest of his things very fast!  A suggestion, get your friend one of those Carters 5packs of Onesies in size NB.  They are fairly affordable, and can handle a few washings.  No need to get any cute "outfits" because NB clothes won't be worn that long.
  • The boys were born at 5 lbs. 13 oz. and 6 lbs. 12 oz., no NICU time.  We got just a few preemie things, but the boys never wore them.  We had them in NB from the start.  They were a little big on Ben, but not so much that I had to go get more preemie stuff.  We kept long sleeved onesies on under everything and that helped.

I can't even remember how long they wore NB clothes for.

  • My LO was over 40 weeks and was 5.14 when we left the hospital, Newborn clothes were huge on him for a few weeks.  Preemie clothes would have fit better, but it really didn't matter have pj's that were a little loose fitting.  If I knew i'd have another teeny baby, I still wouldn't waste money on premie clothes.

  • DD cane home at 6 lbs and wore 0-3 for a few weeks until my mom got us NB size.  she wore those for 3 months or so, but DD is still a tiny peanut.

  • Preemie sleepers won't fit that length.  They are for under 17 inches.  NB clothes will be a bit big, but that is what will fit.

  • DD was 5lbs, 6 oz, left the hospital on time (CS, so 4 days old) at 4lbs, 13 oz.  She was 8lbs at one month old.  She did have a few preemie outfits, which were bought after I had her (4 weeks early).

    - Did you need preemie size for you 5-6 lber?
           - If yes how long were they in it for?

Maybe 4 weeks from Gymboree, 2 weeks other brands.  She was 18 inches, so she grew out of the sleepers first.

    - How long was your DC is NB?

Till at least 2 months, prob. closer to 3 months

    - Did most people get you NB clothes (either at your shower or when DC was born) or did you need to go out and get some because everyone gave you larger clothing?

Not a lot of NB clothes.  Plus, because she was little for so long, the clothes people timed so well didn't really work out (meaning warm winter clothes didn't fit her until Spring).  I think people are hesitant to buy NB clothes because some LO's are never in it.  MIL bought us a ton of stuff and friends brought us a few outfits that we had in the rotation.  She wore this adorable outfit (preemie) from Gymboree for EVER.  It had all the matching pieces.  When I put it away, the sleeper was an entirely different shade of pink than the hat, because it was washed so often.

  • DS was 5 lbs 5 oz and 18.5 inches when he was born.  We never had any preemie clothes, smallest we had were NB.  NB was even big on him!  At this point I forget how long he could wear NB for, but we would also put him in 0-3 month stuff and just roll it up.
