Success after IF

Holycrap he ATE!! FOOD!

OK, it wasn't much, but Sam has really taken to bananas.  He likes to gnaw and suck on the whole nana, and lick mashed banana off my finger.  When DH was out (after I kicked them out - see below), he decided to see if Sam might like orange juice (I know, I know...).  Well, he does.  DH kept dipping his finger in juice and Sam just gobbled it up.  So I thinned some mashed banana with OJ and same ate several spoonfuls, off the spoon.

I don't know he is "supposed" to be having citrus right now but I don't really care ;)  He actually took food into his mouth, evaluated it, and swallowed.  That's a big improvement from gagging until vomitting!

Oh - random question - when is it OK to give mashed beans?  A girlfriend said that her LO loved mashed cannellini beans and it was a great way to add veggies to her daughter's diet (mash veg+beans).

Re: Holycrap he ATE!! FOOD!

  • Yay, that is great!!! He'll keep being more open to things don't worry.

Mashed beans- as long as it is a consistency that he can handle & will eat, I dont think there is any reason he couldn't have it! I haven't limited any of the foods I feed my LOs except milk & honey (I haven't done PB but really just b/c of the stickiness), but everyone's pedi is different on the off limit foods thing.

GL! Hope it keeps going well!

  • I think wholesomebabyfood.com says 8-10 months for beans...it's harder to digest.

That's great that he stomached something and enjoyed it!

  • Yea Sam!!!  It's worth it to keep trying because what they don't like one day, they devour a few days later!

I'm not sure about beans, but, for some reason, I think I remember reading something that made me decide until her 9 month doctor appointment to talk about it.  But, fundamentally, I don't think there's anything in beans that would make it not OK now.

  • I wouldn't stress about the citrus.  Drinking a lot of OJ might be hard on the tummy, but other than that, I think it is fine.

DD was eating beans at that age - loved chickpeas and black beans.

  • Yay, Sam!

Mashed beans were one of the first finger foods Elizabeth really loved, probably closer to 9 months. She loves black beans and they're super easy to send to daycare in her lunch. I kind of lightly smash so they can't roll around since it makes them easier to pick up.

  • Yay!!  I thought he might be more willing to eat bananas.  Beans are a great first food.  You can feed them to him mashed up whenever you want to start.
  • That sounds like great news!

  • yea for progress!!!  i think beans would be fine right now mashed up...
  • Fantastic!  We've been having great luck with banana too... just be careful, because it has made Lucy a little constipated.  (Apparently I got overly excited that she was eating food and I may have overdone it - poor girl!).

I think beans would be okay, too!  Let me know how it goes if you try it!

  • Hooray for Sam! I am so glad he liked something. I would vote to keep giving him what ever he likes. At that age I would worry less about nutrition and more about him likeing and not gaging on food.
