Quick! UTI: Did your DD get antibiotics?

I think DD has a UTI, as she's been scratching at her crotch for a couple of days, and when asked she says her vagina itches. DC said she's been going to the bathroom more often, but I haven't seen her do it at home.

DH thinks they'll just tell us cranberry juice and send us home. I'm pretty sure they'll give us antibiotics, but not sure. I already had her start drinking cranberry juice yesterday and yogurt.

Advice? Experience?

Thanks!

  • I thought a UTI came with lots of pain? Maybe it's a yeast infection? Or just itching from lack of wiping?
  • When I had one recently the dr. told me the cranbery juice would help the symptoms but wouldn't kill the infection. I would assume that would be the same for little girl parts too.

  • ML had some whiteness in that area, and itchiness, but  her pedi, and I confirmed with our family doc, that it did not look infected at all, that it's normal.  If she is not complaining of pain during urination, it might be OK.  Of course, I'd check anyway.
  • actually, there was research that found that cranberries did alter the lining of the bladder and urethra , making it hard for bacteria to stick.  so usually at the onset of frequent urination, I start with cranberries or cranberry juice and tons of water. if still complaining a few days later, I call for an appointment.

but like the pp said, could possibly be a yeast infection (itching).  have you checked her for a rash/redness?  make sure she's wiping good.

  • Halo, we are now thinking is a yeast infection, not a UTI. I have Nystatin cream that I put on, and she's still drinking cranberry juice and more yogurt this am.

Both times my DD had a UTI, it was accompanied by a high fever. I bet she has yeast infection, not a UTI.
