That's really sad, but I would have some serious issues letting my baby sleep in a crib that was nearly 15 years old (not saying it couldn't happen on a crib that's 2 years old, but). Things go bad, wood (especially wood that isn't real) goes bad, screws become loose... same goes for car seats. 

That said, it will be nice to see all drop side cribs recalled soon, and hopefully stiffer rules on crib construction!

Edit: just read the date of the story! That would have helped!

You seem to have misread the article. In 1997, her son slept in the same crib that her daughter had slept in two years earlier. Her other two kids slept in a different crib.

Wow, this happened at 10 months old!  I wouldn't have thought a baby that could crawl and move around so much would get stuck like that.  Guess I was wrong.  So sad.
