Those with school age children

have any of you ever successfully gotten your child out of school they were zone for to another one?

I'm asking because Teagan is starting kindergarten in the fall.  When we bought the house it stated we were zoned for a certain elementary school. So I went up to the school today to get things figured out about registration (yes, I'm behind still can't make up my mind) and they said we were in another zone.  Basically we live on a main road, those on the left side go to one and those on the right side go to another.

I got some paperwork to get her moved, but it will take up until the last minute before we will know.  Just wanted to see if anyone had been through the process before.

Re: Those with school age children

  • What county are you in?  We live in Cobb and my home school is rated a 3 with 45% unable to speak english.  So we have sent the kids for the last three years to a private school.  I know that House Bill 251 ables us to look at a different school in our district.  So I applied to a school that is rated a 9, but with similar financial status and both my kids got in.  So we are sadly and excitedly going to public school.  Sad to leave our school of three years, but excited for a new adventure.  Let me know if I can help with anything else. melliebugs @ gmail dot com

  • I did this for Pumpkin last year, but it was for a childcare hardship.  Check into the Ga school choice law.  That may work for you.  My friend did that and said she didn't have to reapply every year, and it was very easy to be approved.  Here is a link to FAQs.

  • We are in Fulton County. They gave me the number to the county offices and they said there were only a few cases where they would let you switch. I faxed all the info in so we shall see.  The kids are in private school right now, Kyan won't start for another 2 years. I'm not quiet ready for Teagan to start school, so sad.

How old are your children? I may take you up on that offer and email, thanks!

Sorry we must have posted at the same time. Did you get approved for the childcare hardship?  I will check into the other option as well. Thanks!

  • Kate is 8 (going into 3rd grade) and Noah is 6 (going into 1st).  Maggie is 3 so I have some time.  Fulton County website isn't easy to follow.  I had to have my info in by the 8th of July.  I know in Cobb County you can write a hardship for anything!!!  If they have a spot you will most likely get approved.  I will see whatelse I can find out for you.
  • I know someone who lives in martin's landing that recently applied and got into another school....so just don't give up.  Good luck!

I did get approved for the childcare hardship transfer last year.  I am moving into the school district in less than a week, so I won't need a transfer this year.  The only problem with the childcare hardship transfer is that you have to reapply every year so you run the risk of being turned down, with the Ga school choice law, you don't have to reapply.
