Sciatic Nerve Pain

I've read in "the books" that sciatic nerve pain is common.  The only suggestion I've found for it though is to lie on the opposite side of the pain to relieve pressure.

Well, that's not working.  Not to mention the fact that BOTH sides are bothering me.  It's getting to the point where I'm limping and struggle to even get up from a seated position.

Anyone else go through this?  Did you learn any tricks to ease the pressure?

Re: Sciatic Nerve Pain

  • I had AWFUL sciatic nerve pain and nothing really helped.  The best thing I can say is don't sit or stand for too long.  I found if I was up for more than an hour or so, or if I sat that long, it was worse.  But if I switched it up often it didn't get so bad.  I also alternated between a heating pad & ice packs.  GL and I hope it goes away soon for you!

  • oh and get a massage!  I got a prenatal massage when it was really bad and it helped.  She did something where she was pressing her fist into my lower back/butt area and massaging and it made a big difference.  I tried to explain it to DH so he could do it at home but we never got it right.
  • Pool helps a lot!  I would also get into the bath when it was really bad.  I noticed that if I would sit in the recliner with my feet up it helped me.  Mine was always SO much worse if I were moving and so much better if I were sitting down though.  And laying on my side never helped me either.

  • I use heating pads/ice packs and switch them up. A hot bath usually helps. Or, I use my fist to put pressure on the affected area,  and press hard in small circles. I hope something works for you soon!

  • Thanks girls!!!  I'll try everything suggested.

  • You and my sister are date twins AND sciatic nerve pain twins. I'm sorry you have to deal with it, it saddens me when I see her trying to muscle through it.

She definitely does the heating pad as much as possible. Good luck

  • Pilates!

I've had siatica since high school. I've tried everything. The only thing that works for me when I'm having a particularly bad flare up has been pilates. And the great thing is it's safe to do while PG ( still check w/ dr) and gets your body for labor.

Laura, this kind of helps me.  I was wondering if I was strange for going through this so early, when baby isn't big enough to be putting pressure on anything,  It's nice to know I'm not alone.  I hope your sister finds some good "cures"!
