Does your LO use a blanket?

Is there an age when it's okay for them to use? Is it as early as when they are able to lift their heads?

  • DS has been sleeping with a blanket since 4 months.

  • I keep a blanket folded over the side of DS's crib and he will pull it down and snuggle with it sometimes in the middle of the night.  I would imagine it would be fine as soon as they are able to roll over both ways.
  • We've been using a blanket since Ry was 4 or 5 months old.
  • DS has been sleeping with a blanket since day one. We started with a swaddling blanket and then worked our way up to a crib blanket.

  • I'm not sure what age DD was when we started using one, but she was younger.  She does use one now, but she more snuggles with it, rather than actually using it.

Ditto. It's totally a comfort thing, not a cover for warmth.

  • Both of my kids used a blanket from birth. DD went to bed tonight with 6 blankets, beating out DS's 4. lol

I think once they are rolling well and really moving around well you can probably use one but my LO moves too much to ever keep a blanket on. He is never in the same spot and never keeps a blanket on. We still use the sleep sack.

    This is DD exactly

  • The AAP says not till 2. I would potentially feel OK giving them blankets now but they wouldn't keep them on; we're still using sleep sacks, which work great for us (and for discouraging crib-climbing and diaper-diving!).

ETA: We've been letting them sleep with small taggie blankets (12" square) since 9m but just as loveys, not really as blankets.

  • My first DS didn't sleep with a loose blanket until he was over 2yr.  He slept really well with Halo sleepsacks.  Not only are they safer then loose blankets when it comes to SIDS/suffocation, but it actually kept him warm all night because he couldn't kick it off.  DS2 sleeps in Halo sleepsacks now.

  • Casey uses a sleepsack at night but she has her 'blankie' that she must have in with her.  But that's more of a security blanket.  I really don't think she'd sleep with an actual blanket, she rolls too much.  Plus she wakes up during the night if she doesn't have her sleepsack on her.
