I've always thought of 6 months as a minimum and 12 months as the "norm" for most people. Anything beyond that would be "extended". A lot of that has to do with the responses I got to my own BFing--no one said boo about it through 6 months, there were a lot of "so when are you thinking of weaning" comments until 12 months and then you got into the "you're still BFing?" comments. We did 21 months and 26 months with my two and I would definitely consider both of them "extended" breastfeeders.

For us, and our pedi, two years is a minimum/expected. If we should happen to wean at 20 months or something, it won't be the end of the world, but it's not "extended" for us until after two years. As an aside, I LOVE our pedi, and love that we are on the same page!
